by discreet I mean a system that can be run on an unattended yard so preferably one that can't be seen, wireless and remote. Does anyone use anything like this and, if so, how does the set up work. I am wanting to protect an energiser and an electric fenced hen run that powers from it.

How about a stealth camera? It's battery powered and stores pictures / video's on a memory card. You would need the more expensive infra-red one as a flash would give the game away as to its location. They are also called wildlife cameras.

I'm saving the pennies for one to watch over my stables this winter as we have no electric
