I don't know anything about this horse. I've just seen these on FB and thought HHO might have some insight as to why.....

Nice, really top way of training- not!! Honestly, what are people like!
I was once told by a well known trainer to basically do that with a horse that I had that was naughty- stick a tight pair of side reins on in the stable and shut the top door. Needless to say I walked away.

i think it is cruel.
i think what they are trying to achieve is only gained through correct work, time and effort.

there are no short cuts.

my friend went for a lesson with a respected local rider/trainer,when she arrived, she had a nosy in the stables and saw something like this.when the lesson was over, she checked again and the horse had been left the same.
she voted with her feet and never went back.

actually,it`s pretty disgusting and makes me cross.

I don't really see what they can gain from doing this  Apart from pissing the horse off and making it really uncomfortable.

I saw a whole barn of baby cobs trussed up in this way at a VERY high profile showing personalities yard a few years back myself.... they were left for an hour before being loosened off. :(

I don't like it, would never do it. The only 'saving grace' is that at least there isn't a rider on top banging about trying to achieve the same (although i suspect that to probably be the case when ridden).
This type of thing just totally misses the point of horsemanship :( Makes me mad and sad in equal measure.

Amazing how with all the new ways of nice training, there are still some old fashioned ignorant ways of supposedly getting a top line, would be interested to know as to why this method was used before I pass judgement

This is common practice among some big name sucessful show pony producers, I have even heard of a few who turn out (very private yards) like this others leave them like this in stables all day or night.

I think this practice is totally barbaric

oh no that's just horrible

what is the perceived purpose of this? Does it have a name? I think this is what one of my show cob neighbour person told me to do with my youngster (or a form of it anyway)

won't be partaking though - couldn't do that to my wee baby!

Nothing for me to discuss. This is in my view cruel and causing the horse obvious torment and probably discomfort. No idea what it is supposed to achieve except a horse with a very sore mouth, a stiff neck and a desperate and defeated attitude.
Trussed up and shut in a box for an animal that relies on being able to see and then run from danger and top it off with the forced bit pressure and inability to straighten it's neck is just disgusting, unfair and downright mean. Only someone who has no true understanding or compassion for horses could do this.  :(

No doubt the end result is deemed to justify the means and that fact that probably thousands of horses have survived this torture and torment is a testament to their natures, it certainly isn't an example of good horsemanship!

Anyone care to describe the picture?

I'm getting the general gist, but can't see pictures on this machine.

Ta.

Grey horse wearing a bridle and roller, Newmarket coupling on the bit with a rope passing from one side of the roller, through the link on the coupling and round to the other side.

This is pulling the head in towards the horse's chest, his mouth is open and he looks very uncomfortable. As you would. Lousy way to 'train' a horse :(

Thank you.

Sadly I thought it would be something like that.

And the Animal Act (sorry, can't remember its full name).

It's all a joke - when they talk about 'Man's inhumanity to man', they should amend to include animals.

Would like to get hold of the people that order it done/do it.

Their idea of a quick fix? Why? Because they can't be bothered and have no conscience?

What were the comments on FB about the photo?

They are all pretty much the same comments as on here.

It's a pic that has gone viral - not sure of it's origin.

I saw this happen when I was 18. A livery had trouble with his new horse bolting when hunting. So his GF (who also taught at the yard) did this to the horse every day and rode him like this every day. Her rational was to 'break down the muscle' under his neck so he wouldn't have the strength to bolt any more.

Did it work? No - the horse still bolted. But it took the light away from his eyes and left him empty.

He was sold to a lovely lady who didn't know how to pick hooves out or tie a quick release knot :(

That looks extremely tight and uncomfortable. I suppose the only thing it could achieve is that the horse might become good at putting up with a lot. :(

Shocking way to treat any horse. Made me feel quite sick seeing those images, yet again someone trying to dominate a horse. And if this is to help the horse go "on the bit" or in an "outline" they must be absolutely deluded.
