Our puppy has a flaw......he has a bit of a taste for his own crap!

He is fine when he is in our company, but when he is out in his kennel and run, he likes to eat it! Which is great for not having to clean up, but not great for cuddling up with him

Breeder told us to put pineapple chunks in his food, but that doesn't really seem to make a difference!
Why do they do this? OH had a thought, maybe he is cleaning up after himself? He is a very very clean boy, so could this be why?

Is there anything else we can try?

Apart from this he is perfect in every way - he is just sitting here watching me type this!

Alot of people believe, they are lacking something in their diet............I for one, thinks it's cos they are greedy and or find the taste and smell lovely......just like horse crap.....it's just their food in smoothe warm form

My friends Lurcher (my Boris's sister!) eats poo, her own, other dogs, horses etc. She is a faddy eater although getting better, she has been offered the best in food but still prefers to eat poo!
 
Not had a dog that does this but there are quite a few theory's on why dogs do it.

Second the pineapple solution, it gives their stools a very bitter taste.
 
Horse poo I understand, Rolling in duck poo, fox poo and badger poo I also get but eating its own poo! this seems odd to me! but I own an elderly jack that eats her own sick which is also yuk.
 
My dog did this too, it is about the diet. Essentially they are not digesting all the food so when it comes out the other end it is like dinner again but heated - yum yum. LOL. Change the diet. I put my girls on Eukanuba and they stopped straight away (although I now feed Royal Canin)
 
Really interested in this one- I have a border collie and mini dachsie, both of whom are fed the same food and both eat their own and each other's poo! The dachs actually watches the collie poo and then promptly eats it! How disgusting - I think I may try a different food - they get Bakers at the moment.
 
No disrespect but I'm not suprised they are eating it if they're fed Bakers - no goodness in the food at all so essentially nothing that they can digest and use.. just lots and lots of additives, animal derivatives, salt, sugar and colourings!! It looks very tasty but doesn't give the dogs what they need - just makes them hyper like kids and E numbers... if you change the food you'll notice also that you have less 'mess' to clear up as the dogs will 'use' more of the food.. HOWEVER they won't necessarily like the change.. again think kids it'll be like changing them from sweets to fruit!! but defo a transition that should be considered.

Eukanuba - wouldn't use it myself due to the animal testing that they carry out to check their food (Think lab testing & caged animals)

Benjamin - The name for the puppies behaviour is "Coprophagia" you can get a product to encourage the pup to stop this but the diet is a good place to start before purchasing 'quick fix tablets' .. not sure what you feed lil' Gunnar on but check the back of the packet ideally your looking to feed a food with as little "animal derivatives/Ash/Animal Meal" in as possible - it is a minefield though!!!!

Have a google on "Coprophagia" theres some interesting theories.

We are feeding Genesis puppy. Came highly recommended from Breeder.

We are looking into feeding Raw tho....

This means there is not 'real'chicken meat content just the nasty bits of the chicken, meaning everything is ground up hence 'meal' ..

I would defo go with Raw if you can... or a good quality shelf meat such as nature diet.
