Any ideas how to stop our 14 week border eating his own poo, sorry it's a bit early for this but he's been doing this since we got him at 8 weeks and vet is no help at all
Lots of dogs do this, and nobody knows why. The best way to deal with it is to be vigilant, and as soon as he has done one, pick it up. Don't let him see you do this as he will think it is something to play with. Our dog used to do this as a puppy, but has now grown out of it. It is a habit as much as anything so breaking the habit can help.
Thanks sooty, we try and pick it up straight away but have quite a big garden so sometimes miss some, however, he doesn't always eat it - never on walks, it's usually when we haven't seen it at once and he goes back to it. We meet a dog sometimes who has to wear a muzzle on walks to stop her eating other dogs poo!
He is fed on Burns so wouldn't think his diet is lacking anything, and wormed regularly with Panucur.
Hi,
My dad's dog did the same, we were told to make sure its all picked up (not very easy if you want them to roam freely and have a big outdoor space!!) and we were also told to feed her pineapple as apparently they then dont want to eat their poo once the pineapple has been digested?!
And they also mentioned that instead of picking a poo up straight away, sprinkle chilli powder on it and hopefully they shouldnt want to do it again!!
Good Luck!
my deerhound did the same, just tired to poo pick reg and tell her off to make sure she knows it was wrong. Stopped after a month?
think its just a puppy thing?
