Right the youngster went down with alleged strangles - not going through all the detail again but I have done everything I was asked even down to the guttarl pouch wash and the attending senior vet did intermate that his vet had been a bit OTT - but what is done is done.

Whilst the treatment was in progress I was seriously hurt, horse reared up and landed on my ankle - this was in Nov.... I am still not fit, and wont be walking let alone riding until later this year.

Question is would you still disinfect your tack ? I was too busy with the illness to disinfect at first, and I have been in no fit state to do anything since the accident, as it has been set back after set back.

What would you do?

Thats my problem Ali - it is already 14 weeks since the tack saw the horse, and is liable to be another 12.... The bridles I have no issue in disinfecting and the bits, but my saddles..... one is brand new - the other has sude panels....... and that is only a few months old.

Ah didn't realise the time period was so long. Given the time period and that S. equi equi isn't a spore former, the risk is minimal so I'd feel OK about not disinfecting your saddles :)

No, I wouldn't worry about it. Strangles can't survive that long outside the body.

I find that interesting...not arguing since we are on different sides of the pond and the viruses can act differently with enviroment.

here in Canada the Univerity of Guelph has studies the disease and its length of survival is up to three months here.

We actually brought stangles to one of our barns since we use a tractor for round bale delivery....we had to swab about 20 farm machinery but found the spore...lesson learned.

What is your guys incubation/quarenttine time like?
