dislocated stifle joint

A friend of mine has a day old foal that has been visited by the vet who says he has a dislocated stifle, he tried putting it back but it just pops out again. His advice was surgery which will cost about 2 grand. The colt won't be used as a stallion and will be castrated.
Has anyone had any experience with this?

Hi, do you mean total dislocation or simply a slipping stifle where the patella moves out of the groove it sits in and the hind leg is extended behind the horse until they can manage to 'pop' it back in again - also known as a locking stifle. If it is the latter, it is not uncommon in young horses and generally disappears as the horse strength and muscle tone increase. We had a young horse whose stifle regularly slipped, especially when coming out of the stable in the morning, but once she was broken and strengthened up it was not longer an issue.
 
im afraid at that age i would cnsider sadly putting foal down as it will need the op and it will prob always have lameness prob and have arthritis from early age.
sad but better to end a life rather than they have life f pain.
if u do go down that route ring national foalin g bank as they may have a orphan foal that needs a mare to succle on
at least that b saving another foal.
