My friends horse is very ill with colic. From what I can gather, it seems to be an intestinal displacement. Any experiences of these? Particularly any successes that have only been treated medically?
Thanks

It rather depends on which bit of intestine has displaced... and where it has displaced to. Sometimes a bit of gut will fill with gas and kind of float into the wrong place and these will sometimes go back if the gas dies down. Sometimes bits can flop back to where they should be after some lungeing. Simple displacements can sometimes be treated medically, but if it's a piece of gut displaced by twisting (such as the large colon) or getting trapped (eg in the epiploic foramen) then it tends to need surgical correction.

I hope that helps a bit, and I hope your friend's horse makes a full recovery

My mare had surgery for an Epiploic Foramen entrapment just over 6 yrs ago
She had 17 ft of her small intestine removed which is pretty much 1/2 of her hindgut. the first 6 months post op were a real rollercoaster and we manage her feeding very carefully - limited starch as she has reduced digestion ability and restricted grazing when the grass is rich. She's currently in full work and is out doing dressage a couple of times a month.

PM me if you want to know more or chat or have any questions

My mare suffered an entrapment post foaling at the end of June.

She was operated on at Liverpool but very sadly I lost her a week after surgery. I have the upmost respect for the vets and staff they are wonderful people.

I think that the chances of resolving an entrapment without surgery are very varied. I wish you friend and her horse the very best of luck. Please do let us know how things go.
