Disposing of old sugar beet

I have half a bag of sugar beet which is quite old and unusable. I’m reluctant to take it down the tip as I worry about some type of animal eating it dry and potentially dying.

Am I overthinking this?

Any other ideas as to how to dispose of it?

Birds can eat sugar beet, could you soak small amounts and leave it out for them each day? This is the time of year they really need more food.

No I had this the other day. I wasn’t sure after clearing out my feed shed what to do with all the old stuff, indluding sugar beet. I actually ended up putting it in my household waste bin.

I have exactly the same problem. I plan on putting it in my household bin. It’s not off, but the whole bag has been emptied by rats. If it wasn’t so much I’d leave it out somewhere where the ponies couldn’t eat it before it rained, so it could be eaten by something, but it’s almost a whole sack. Even soaking a bit at a time will take ages.

Put it in your green waste or compost bin, not general waste.
Soak and add to muck heap.
Soak and dig into a veg bed or as a layer in a no-dig system.
Anything to avoid landfill really.

Or if its just old and not manky, soak and give to cows.

Add water then tip on the compost heap.

If its musty or mouldy i wouldnt feed it to anything, and would just compost it. If you dont have a compost pile, add to your green waste bin, rather than landfill black bin.

They can be really pretty to look at and a great source of food for wildlife, assuming they're whole oats? Otherwise green waste or food waste bin.

Scatter along grass verges for birds etc to eat. This is a "hungry" time of year so will be very popular.

Maybe in bits over a few days not in 1 go.

It’s a full 20kg bag! (crushed oats)
Plus I’m binning them because they are old and will have gone off. Not sure I’d risk giving them to birds

I wouldn't worry about it going to landfill. It will break down and rot unlike most of the black bin stuff.

Yes but it will have another use if it goes to composting.
