Some of you may remember Harry Hobnob, my old welsh sec D. I bought him to hunt, as he "didn't do showjumping", after being overjumped as a youngster jumping 1.20m classes. I hunted him, teamchased him and had so much FUN on him, never asked him to do anything hard. Then we decided to see if we could get him jumping again. Took him to some tiny showjumping- he loved it. Gradually we got him jumping upto 3"3ft easily. We found that you had to trust him and let him go when showjumping, let him sort the strides out for himself- the second you gather him up and try to ride him like a showjumper he would grind to a halt.

Anyway so after we had taken to some successfull shows where he won every time out (he was fast and was seriously good at jumpoffs!), we decided to sell him.

We where totally honest when selling him, we wanted him to go to a hunting home ideally as this is what he truely excelled at. The first person who came to see him saw us jump him 1.20m at home, and they fell in love with him. We told them he is NOT a showjumper, although he has been doing well recently, but that we want him to go to a HUNTING home- she said, "oh yes yes of course we only want him to hunt".

We took him to a local showjumping centre so they could watch him. The girl took him round the clear round and let him stop, but I went in the class and he won it easily.

So they where certain that they wanted him. They obviously thought they had got a bargain...he was sold for reasonably cheap as we didnt buy him to make a profit.

Anyway, I went team showjumping yesterday- and Harry was there with his new owners. We saw him in the 3ft- he got eliminated at the first fence.
It really upset me. The girl just sat there. We told him not to hang onto him but she did- she had him in a severe gag which he didnt need. We then heard that shes going to sell him.
I hate to think of him being passed around and now im really upset about selling him... he was finally happy with me, and then we shipped him off to someone else who he doesnt get on with.

We told them he wasnt ever going to be a showjumping pony- why didn't they listen to us?!
He does love showjumping, if you ride him properly...
Here he is, and you cant tell me he isn't enjoying it:

Do you think i should try and buy him back?! But I dont want the same happening again, and i dont want to keep him forever as we dont have the land/facilities

Ah poor harry, maybe some things just arnt meant to be. If you can you could take him back and then ensure you seriously vet every home, ideally find someone you know that might do well on him and gently suggest it, I am sure with all the compitions you go too there must be someone

I wish you luck and hope things with him look up very soon

Could you not get in touch and see if they want a hand?

Offer to go to some shows with them and see if they can work through it?

If you sell a horse thats the way the cookie crumbles....you cannot specify what you want done with him. Sadly you can try but if they saw you win a class with him, then obviously they got hungry for some ribbons.

Why did you sell him when he was doing so well?

I am sorry this has happened - its never nice to hear.

However, as his owners they can obviously do what they want with him - they saw you showjumping him successfully, they probably wanted to do the same. After all, you did the same thing - bought him as a horse that "didn't showjump" and ended up doing it nonetheless.

Unfortunately it seems they are not capable of dealing with him, and its a shame you didn't realise that before you sold him to them. That's the problem with selling horses though - you can never guarantee what will happen to them. The only thing you can really do is to either buy him back and maybe put him on loan where you can keep control, or walk away.
