Can someone please clarify the strides between each of the following for a 16.3 horse.

I need to start doing lots of grid work on him as his stride is quite long and my instructor has given me lots of homework to do.

So....

Double - 7 strides (for 1 canter stride)
Double 2 - 11-12 (for 2 canter strides)
Pole before a jump - 6.5strides
Bounce - 4 strides
Canter poles - 6.5 stides
Trotting poles - 2 strides

Have I got those right?

Also if I put a pole after a jump, say 1 canter stride after it how many paces should this be?

I am having a lot of trouble getting Barons paces right up to a jump due to his canter stride being so long. So aswell as working on really collecting his canter we are putting a pole 2 strides before the jump and getting him perfect up to the pole then putting a double after the pole or a bounce. I have been practicing with a single jump as im unsure of the strides and cant remember what my instructor told me

I dont want to mess it up and knock his confidence by getting the strides mixed up as he is doing really well in his lessons

I've always done the pole before a jump (approaching at trot) in a grid as 2.5 of my strides.

Canter poles as 4 strides between them

Firstly, the size of the horse is irrelevant (unless it's a pony lol!), as all course builders build to a 'standard' 12' stride.

Sooo...

Double (for 1 canter stride) - 24' (approx human 8 strides)
Double (for 2 canter strides) - 36' (approx human 12 strides)
Pole before a jump - 12' (approx human 4 strides)
Bounce - 12' (approx human 4 strides)
Canter poles - 12' (approx human 4 strides)
Trotting poles - 4' to 5' apart

ETS: You may find your horse struggles to make some of these distances at first if they aren't used to them, so you can start smaller and work up to them
