I have an 18 month old lurcher Boy. Its always a problem keeping him up to weight -it seems that after a couple of months he goes right off his grub and refuses to eat for a couple days, sicks up some flem and looks poorly. Last time I took him to the vet who confirmed that he couldn't feel any obstruction that he may have swallowed. A friend suggested he may have diverticular disease. I have never heard of this - does anyone have any experience of it?

The only experience I have is I have it and it is quite common in middleaged women.:o I would be surprised in a dog so young. What are you feeding him?

It sounds to me that he can not digest his food properly but that is just my opinion.

At the moment he is on tins of Butchers Tripe and wholemeal mixer biscuit. He has been on that for about 3 months now. His poo is normal in the morning - the afternoon poo is semi-normal to soft with a little squitty bit at the end. Sorry to be so graphic!! I have tried complete food which he went off and I am loath to keep him on complete as I read its so bad for the dogs. At the moment he is enjoying Sainsburys own brand in jelly but I know that's not ideal for him either! May try Fish for Dogs.

Yeah, that's not a great combination of foods, sorry, sounds like it is going straight through him :o try Fish4Dogs, Skinners, Arden Grange, maybe try introducing raw or a butchers bone a couple of days a week.

Dogs can get pancreas problems/can't absorb their food but I bet he will improve with a higher quality food (and it doesn't have to cost the earth :) )

I have tried him on raw but he gave up on that he also got gastro enteritis whilst he was on raw. I really would like to feed him my own cooked food. I started feeding him tins of Butchers as I had heard it was the best tinned food. I do prefer the thought of feeding him wet food - it must be better for his digestion surely? Now he is on the Sainsbury's cheap stuff his poo is great and normal all the time! Bought some Fish4dogs today and will ease him onto that slowly.

Feed him your own cooked food then :)
You can also get frozen minced tripe/beef/chicken from pet shops like Pets@Home which you can feed uncooked or browned. Or just cheapo mince for the shop, I just bought three big boxes of chicken wings and two big trays of beef mince for under a tenner in Tesco.
Having said that, if you find something that works, stick to it, even if it isn't haute cuisine!!! Mine is on food for elderly dogs and he is only three :p
