Was wondeirng if there were any full time nurses out there who also had DIY livery (well more assisted)

I work the 12.5 hour shifts 3 days a week.

Recently moved to a lovely yard and I am hoping to take a bit more control of my horses care for the first time (formerly on full livery). Was looking at doing DIY Assisted livery i.e doing all the evening work and also 4 mornings a week as I work 3 - 4 days a week. I wouldnt do the mornings that I was working as I dont think my managers or patients would appreciate the muck under my nails and smell lol. Do any other nurses do this and how do you cope?

Yes! I have my horses at a private yard and theres just me to do them. I have swopped to do permanent nights (with one late shift a month). My nights are 7pm to 7.30am, so I get up to yard about 8.30am and I finish horses off at 5pm in evening. On my late shifts I leave everything ready and pay a friend who lives nearby to bring horses in, I then go up when I have finished work (7.30pm) and rug up and put in final haynet. I sacrifice sleep in order to have my horses where they are, and often only manage 3 hours a day. At a yard where theres people to help out it will be even easier!! I find that spraying yourself (particularly hair) with a lightish, musky perfume will get rid of any horsey odour - infact my colleagues often say 'you smell nice' - they don't realise I haven't had time to wash my hair and have sprayed myself with half a bottle of white musk to get rid of the smell of my old sweaty ridding hat!!!

This is encouraging for me as i am due to start my nursing degree in March and wa wondering how on earth i was going to fit it all in with 2 horses, 2 kids, 2 dogs oh and a husband, i use the same perfume as you too!

I have 3 horses on diy and am a nurse.

I do mine before work and cover up completely, I then get changed etc. before going to work.

I never do more than feed, rug chance and turnout in the mornings. I save all the dirty jobs for the evenings, when I have time to get dirty!!!!

A great tip though..... Never bed on straw! It stinks!

I've done it for years, it's completely do-able, but you have to find a way that works for you.
