I'm thinking of trying to save some money, so have any of you made any of your own stuff for your horses? Could been anything rugs/bridle hooks/browbands etc etc!! Just looking for ideas at the moment, and btw I'm handy with a sewing machine so nothing is too big or too small. Thanks in advance! 😀

I've made some jumps, I've made three so far for a total of less than £40 and still have enough materials left to make a couple more. I wanted small pony jumps but couldnt find any cheap enough

There are two uprights (shown here) and a spread

As WelshD has said wings, fillers, brush fences, planks etc are quite easy to make without specialist tools or knowledge, just what you have in your tool box. You can save quite a lot of money doing this as they're expensive to purchase. I've made all manner of jumps over the years. For making rugs etc you really need an industrial sewing machine because you'll soon burn out the motor on a domestic one. Bridle hooks are again easily fashioned out of wood but they are not really worth the time & trouble as they're cheap enough to buy.

As for tips when building them, don't use pallet wood, it's very low grade wood, absorbs moisture like a sponge & rots quickly. Buy some pressure treated wood, specially for the bases, as the wood is guaranteed for years against rot. When you've built your wings treat them with preservative & repeat each year & the jumps will last.

The jumps look great! Id like to have a go at building some. Can you give us any tips? :)

Very very easy you just copy from pics on the internet, the only tricky bit is making sure you place the holes right for the jump cups. Having the right tools helps, a decent sharp saw (£6 from Wickes) helps a great deal

Fab thanks everyone! So far I've made a rug rail (cost a total of £1.40) out of two headcollar hooks (70p each) a bit of baling twine, and an old broom handle (the broom had broken so needed a new one anyway!) I'm thinking I might try and make some numnahs (I only have two ATM - so gonna try and make a few. Might also try making so reflective rein covers, out of a cheap hiviz Tabbard!

I've made my own haybags from material from an old gazebo, same material made some saddle bags as well. Made trailer ties for my horse trailer. Made my own leadropes from some marine braid rope, and made my own bridles and breastplates in the style I wanted for a lot less than it would have cost me.

I got my dad to build me a rug rack with some old unistrut, and attached some swinging rug rails to it, it currently holds all my rugs, riding coats and bridles and breastplates.

if you have any rugs with torn chest straps you can turn those quite easily in to exercise sheets, I used to have an exercise sheet made of stable rug fabric which I had loads of people after when I sold it

Also old Thermatex rugs can be turned in to neck covers and stable boots very easily

Can I ask where people making their own jumps found reasonably priced poles? I can only find 4ft for good price and it makes them a bit narrow for schooling my youngster!

I went to a timber merchants for mine, the three inch diameter poles were fence posts and I charmed them in to cutting the pointed end off, those were under £4 and the four inch diameter poles were bought as they are for under £6 each

My Mum was really good at making horse hi vis rugs, summer fly sheets, saddle cloths with her sewing machine! She also made a really useful waterproof hi vis lined exercise rug to keep cliped horse warm in winter.

She liked making them so much she carried on and made rugs for all the dogs in the family plus hi vis coats for the dogs as well.

We always made our own jumps, bought poles and used all sorts for stands, plus collected brush wood to make hedge fence between two rails.

Have fun lots of great ideas!

I've made a 6 rung saddle holder. Same priciple as WelshD's upright jump stand but using a piece of 4x4 timber and 2 x 3 prong wall hanging saddleracks. My tack is kept in a metal shipping container so nigh on impossible to hang wall attachments to.

I do sewing projects (not graduated to woodwork yet!!) ... but I've made saddle cloths, saddle covers and exercise sheets and often mend stuff like rugs and fly masks where fastening need re-attaching. The other thing I like to do is I crochet fly veils for my lad. He's a highland with a large forelock, so I make ones with a gap in the front to pull his hair through, and make the ear cover bits our of old T short fabric. The sort that just sit on the his forehead just don't work for him.
