Hi all,

Am considering converting a 7.5 ex tnt lorry into a horsebox. Has anyone done this themselves? Does anyone know any good resources, sites, or books?

Am currently in the planning stage, trying to weigh up costs, and assess wether its cheaper to do myself.

Many TIA.

The caravan club forum is very good.

Cant remember the link though.

My dad has made all of our horse boxes, ours looks a bit old skool now (we've had it about 15 yrs - it's on it's second lorry now!

Can't help much on how he did it but it certainly cost a lot less than buying one ready made if you have the time and effort to put in.

Good luck if you give it a go!

I think the H&H carries a couple of adverts for companies that sell ramp kits and partition parts etc.

My cousin/brother converted a 3.5ton Transit Luton job for me several years ago. It took us 6 x 12hr days. They made everything from scratch as they were handy with the welder and were able to source things like ramp springs second hand from friends.

It cost about £500 in parts including laying a new floor, but they didn't charge me any labour, which was my saving grace. Due to the size of my lorry, it was just a 2 big-pony herringbone job with a tack locker in the luton, and nothing fancy. I had it for 3 years and sold it for what I'd paid for it.

I'm sure it is cheaper to convert a lorry yourself than it is to buy one. It just depends how much time and what facilities you have??

I spent about £4.5K fitting out a lorry - living and horse area, but it already had a ramp, windows and partitions and didn't need spraying.
