Isn't it really annoying when your trying to feed your pony all these fancy supplements that promise to make your horses coat shine but never do ect:rolleyes:

Well, i thought that i could start a thread where everyone posts a few helpful DIY horsey tips. Here are some of mine:)

GROOMING:

1) If you have a chestnut horse, feed it pumpkin because it can really improve coat colour. All you have to do is chop up a piece of pumpkin including the skin and seeds and just microwave it for around 8-0 minutes, until it is soft. Then mix it in with the feed.

2) For itchy tails, mix equal parts of Listerine (original formula) and baby oil in a spray bottle. Lightly spray it on the tail and using your fingers, comb the hair making sure the spray goes right into the roots. Apparently this really works and seems to get rid of dandruff too.

3) Lightly coat blackened hoofs with hairspray for a better shine. This can be quite useful at shows. :)

4) When you are cleaning your grooming brushes, occasionally rub in some baby oil through the bristles to keep them soft and also this will make them last for a longer time.

SADDLERY:

1) To make silver parts of your saddlery really shiny, rub them over with a pencil eraser and then buff it off with a clean cloth.

2) If you have stainless steel bits or stirrups that have rusted over time, soak them in a bowl of vinegar for several days to dissolve the rust. Then rinse them thoroughly before using them again.

3) If your having one of those really lazy days where you run out of saddle soap and you can’t be bothered to go to the tack shop:rolleyes: then you can make your own saddle soap by melting a normal bar of soap, oil and milk in a pan, and leaving it to set in a tub.

i got most of these off the internet:o but feel free to post any DIY tips on this thread if you have any :D

Is that seriously true about pumpkin and chestnuts?!

I heard that furniture polish makes an excellent spray conditioner for tails! I just use baby oil though which is cheap and shiny.

I also use baby wipes for everything: invaluable at shows for tack, wiping eyes, etc.

Then there's nappies for poulticing.....held in place with a sock.....

What else....

I have a bay and a chestnut. I will give it to both and let you now if they end the same colour ;-)

Better wait till next Halloween though.

Ooh, never heard of the pumpkin thing, wonder if other types of squash will do! I'm not sure if she needs to be more orange mind! The Listerine on tail seems a good idea too, she does get itchy and rub it!

I am also a big fan of baby wipes and baby oil!

I've used listerine on tails to stop itching, only the original one though.

Heres an old thing i used to do - nail an old tin can upside down to the wall as a whip holder. You can nail another a little further up with the top and bottom removed to hold them together.
