Hi all, I'm expecting a little girl in 6 weeks time. My horse is on DIY livery and I have 2 girls part-loaning my mare so have had lots of help with the jobs during pregnancy. I'm hoping this will continue but there will inevitably be some days when I will need to muck out etc and I'm hoping to be back riding ASAP. I also currently turn out both mine and my friend's horse every morning so this will need to change. We can pay services so there is always a back up but I'm interested to see what other's have done with their babies whilst trying to sort their horses.

My stable is the closest to the car park so could leave baby in the car with the door open or put the car seat on the floor in the stable for mucking out. But what to people do for turning out/bringing in - we have to walk a short way to the fields and you can't see the stables from the fields. Is it safe to use a sling etc? Also if you want to ride in the school what did you do?

Obviously the best way is to leave the baby at home whilst doing the horse but this may not always be an option for me so I'm trying to explore other possibilities so that I don't always have to pay for others to sort my mare. If this is the only way then this isn't a problem but would be keen to hear how others have managed.

Congratulations!! exciting times ahead. Enjoy it while she's small as they grow up so fast!

I can't honestly remember what I did when mine was tiny tiny, but once in a routine with feeds etc I parked her in the corner of the yard to watch the world go by (well the sky really) most of the time the fresh air knocked her out and she slept. She was a really easy baby - I didn't chance having another.

Take advantage of the sharers in the first few days/weeks and maybe offer them extra days FOC or ask them to arrange between them covering the days you do if the can be trusted too.

Congratulations!!

My experience of friends in similar situations is use services for the first month or so at least (definitely turn out and bring in). I absolutely wouldn’t put baby in a sling.
