I'm moving from full livery (for which I have a contract) to DIY livery. Do you have a contract for your DIY livery arrangement? If so, what do you consider the key points to be put in the contract? I have started jotting down some items to be presented to YO who will obviously write the contract.
Thank you!

yes i have a contract on DIY, it just stresses really amount of notice needed to leave, some simple yard rules.
i think the YO usually has their own to be honest, i didnt get any say about what goes in mine, i just had to read and sign!

Not being funny but ......... YO defines the rules of the agreement.
I always try to remember that the YO owns the yard and the property belongs to them - and in the main, what they say, goes.
Anything I don't agree with, can be spoken about, but YO has the final say and if I don't like it, I have the choice to go elsewhere.
It is their property not mine and they allow me to rent a small space, for which I am priveledged.

We had a meeting to discuss terms of the DIY now that I am swapping from full livery. We discussed all aspects and came to an arrangement where we agreed on them. Obviously I have just written notes from this meeting, but I am sure they will use these for at least part of the contract..........Maybe I am lucky! I do think that it makes sense to try to agree on aspects, and if this cannot be done then YO has final say. Saves conflict / unhappiness along the way?
I have been on DIY before but they never had contracts at all!

Rotchana - I want you as a livery please!!!!!!

absolutely agree that the YO has to supply the contract - def not teh client

I have a fab YO, really supportive, always laughing, extremely knowledgeable and free with advice, yet diplomatic when asked - and I have to FORCE money on to her. So, it does go both ways.
I am so lucky, needless so say, her livery is full - and next door to my house!!

Yes I have a contact - but I disagree with Rotchana (sorry!) I view myself as a paying customer in my YO's business and therefore I expect a service (fence maintainance, water and electrical services, generally a safe environment for me and my horse) - the service I have agreed on is written down in the contact outlined by the YO.

It always works both ways, guess I'm really lucky. My YO is always spending money trying to improve her service, and as I said I have to hold her down and shove my money into her pocket!!

We don't have any sort of written contract, it's pretty relaxed but you do have to fit in with what the YO wants, it is there yard

Ditto.

Bosworth I want her so you cant have her!!!

It amazes me how if you go and stay in someones house, you are on your best behaviour, but if your horses is staying on someones property, many liveries walk round like they own the place and causing a right old mess!!

Back to the OP, I suggest yard rules/liability/and what to do if your horse breaks a leg or something and needs to be PTS and you are not there is all in the agreement. It is not something that people want to think about, but on DIY if you are not there, giving permission to the YO to make that choice for you if needs be saves alot of problems.

Our YO did talk about bringing in a contract but it didn't happen, I've never been on a yard that had a contract but I do think they are a good idea.
If I was a YO I'd definately have one. I try to be a good livery
& have always left yards on good terms & often stayed in touch with old YOs.
But I'm paying for a service so don't feel indebted to my YO, just as I don't expect him to be grateful to me for the money I pay him, if I don't like how he chooses to run his business then I'm free to leave.
I have heard a fellow livery moaning about how they hate paying him their hard earned money because he's a wealthy person (he inherited a lot of money from his Dad). I think that's unreasonable, he's providing us with a very good service so we should pay for it, his wealth has nothing to do with it.

I have a contract, and it is quite lengthly!! However, it is all common sense and drawn up on the YO's vast experience of running a yard!

We do, just saying how much notice we would have to give if we wanted to leave and basic do's and don'ts, I know my mum signed it but can't remember signing it myself.
Both us and the lady runs the yard has a copy but i don't know where ours is, have been on the yard for a couple of years so it would be in a draw somewhere.

I have one on my current DIY yard.
Works well, I respect the rules and the property and she provides the service I am paying for

Don't have it to hand but, off of the top of my head, it says that the livery has to -

muck out at least once a day. No deep littering.
provde adequate feed and bedding
drive slowly on the yard and access road
no dogs
no smoking
give a months notice
follow the yard worming programme
buy all haylage and shavings from YO

the YO has to -
provide safe fencing
provide a water supply in the field
provide good drainage in stables
give 2 weeks notice before movng fields or introducing new horses
there's something about the stable roofs also I think

It also has contact details, emergency contacts, vet and farrier numbers and a disclaimer which says the yard vet can be called if needed in an emergency.

The costs for assisted DIY are all specified - rugging, turnout etc.

It also details the turnout rules - eg 24/7 in summertime and daily in winter.

Why are you not allowed to deep litter, April?

To be honest I have no idea! It's just in the contract and I never thought to query it...
