DIY Re-proofing ... yes or no?!

I do our lightweights as they fit in the machine.

First I run a wash with them and use soda crystals, then I follow the proofing instructions and run the machine again, hang on line and bingo nice clean waterproof rug!

works but the bottle only does a couple of rugs

works too and a bottle goes farther!

I'm not sure it would work miracles on an ancient leaking rug, but as a finish off to washing a turnout then I have been pleasantly surprised, the rain even beads off!
 
Yes we DIY re-proof. It does fine when you have just had to wash a relatively new rug. but I don't think you could get and old and really leaky one back again.

I've got a rug ripper so I tend to buy cheap rugs and hope they last a season, rather than expensive ones that will cost me the price of a cheap rug to repair each time. When I have to repair rips or get the hippo sized amount of mud off I re-proof with Nikwax re-proofer.

Although I have to say I like ThePony's reproofing suggestions better and will try that next time.
 
I get my rugs washed professionally every year and then buy whatever liquid re-proofrear is at my local saddle/feed shop and then give the rug 2 coats, at least I then know that they are waterproof. Have had them washed and proofed professionally and found they leaked within a couple of hours in the rain. :p :p
 
A can of tent reproofer usually will cover 2 outdoor rugs & leave them waterproof for a long time. I have even washed a rug proofed this way and it was still watertight for another 3 months or so.......until it was washed again. So much cheaper this way !!
