Hello all
I am thinking of making a round pen - not sure whether to use pallets, electric tape and plastic posts, possible sheep hurdles or something else. It would be used for ground work initially and eventually to back a youngster so would like to be able to alter the size and possibly move to different locations
Has anyone any tips/experience.
Thank you!

I know people who have used heras panels. They are not really strong or sturdy enough. So be really really careful with any kind of home made version.
I turned a horse out after box rest into a proper round pen and it completely lost its head, tried to jump out (😳obviously failed) but smashed so hard into the top of one of the panels if it were not a proper heavy one it would have flipped over.
As it was the horse had to be stitched up but doesn’t bear thinking about had it been heras panels.

However I guess it depends what you’re putting in it, as I say I’ve known people use them.

I would caution against sheep hurdles - a determined sheep will easily clear them and we've had several woolly fools get their legs caught in them. A horse would make short work of them and could get seriously injured if it misjudged a leap and got caught up. If you're planning to loose school or ride a youngster, I'd scrap any idea of a home-made round pen and either buy or hire a proper one as if a youngster has a bad experience in a home-made version, you'll struggle to get them happy and relaxed in that type of environment again.
