OH is levelling a 20 x 30 metre area in my paddock and post and railing it so I have somewhere to lunge/school should I want to (unlikely) and for somewhere for daughter to faff about with her ponies. It will have drainage but will initially just be dirt/grass but if it works out ie daughter actually decides to start riding her pony we will put down a proper all weather surface but don't want to spend a fortune as we may not be staying here..
Any suggestions..is sand the cheapest option?..

You have to use a special type of sand. I cannot remember the name, but I know it isn't normal sand. TBH I think it is still quite expensive. You willl definately need a membrane underneath your surface.

we are putting down a woodchip surface, and as our land is well drained have been advised that we dont need to put in drainage, so we were going to just put a membrane down and then woodchips, but the supplier has said that we dont need a membrane unless it is very wet, so we are going to try without

At my yard there is an outdoor school made of just sand (the yards on a heathland so the soil is sandy anyway), it's fine to ride on when dry but does get really boggy in the winter and horrible to ride on as there is no proper drainage.

We having a manege being put in at the mo, costs a lot of money even on the cheep. Silica sand cost £2500 +vat for a 100 ton, from Days 08450654655 ask for Derek (he works on the horsey side) he also does all the horsey people in Windsor.. we got all our drainage done free of charge, free (hard core, more than enough to act as drainage just dug deep and built up, we just went round all the demolition sites and found one being done down the road ( well happy) did not pay a thing. the only thing we have to get now is 40 ml lime stone that goes on top on the hard core and the membrain. then the surface..Good luck. if you go on to google and type in "horse manege" you will get pages of how to do your own.. but don't forget PLANNING.... Cus if you don't tell them SOME ONE ELSE WILL.

Thanks all...

Yep, I know however cheaply you do it that its never cheap. Not too worried about that but it won't be in constant use, just a 'safe' area for daughter and co to piddle about on the ponies and it was just a thought out loud that is becoming reality all of a sudden. I suppose I should go back to the drawing board before the diggers arrive. It will be at the top of my paddock so the drainage should be good although we will put in some more. Was just interested to hear if there were different types of sand available or what the other alternatives are or even what to avoid altogether..
