Although I have a field under 3 miles from the house I have my ridden horse @ livery 15miles away. Fabulous yard, good school, horse walker and direct access onto Cannock Chase.................even if I bring my boy back to the field for a few months in the summer to reduce travelling I will continue to pay to ensure I don't lose his livery space.

5-10 minutes really, did 15-20 mins for a while after moving further from yard, until I got fed up there and moved (travel time wasn't the reason for being fed up but did spur me on to move)

I did for a stage have the horses 26 miles away - I was constantly tired, as was driving almost 2 hours every day in total.

Now their under 5 miles away. I loved the facitlities of the yard a lot further away but financially and mentally it wasn't worth it.

Had mine 15mins away but was sort of on my way to work, I did have her 30mins way but found it to much in the mornings, do moved pretty quickly to somewhere closer. Would do about 20mins max now.

I am a stickler for location. I won't go further than 10 minutes for DIY. If there was something making it absolutely special then up to 15 but certainly no more!

For me it would totally depend on the journey. I absolutely detest sitting in traffic and would probably go further afield for a yard that was easier to get to, than a closer one that I had to fight to get to..... But yes, 15-20 mins tops.

I have mine at home, so its no issue, but if they were on DIY I would want them pretty nearby so I could get to them in bad weather, prefereably walkable. If on full livery, then I could cope with further away, as wouldn't be worried if I couldn't get there.. I'm lucky that I'm in a pretty rural area anyway, so there are a lot of yards around..

15 miles is the maximum I would drive - and even then ONLY if it was on the way to work. I did struggle when they were 10 miles away, as 7 days one week and 5 days another week, the only reason I went that direction was purely for the ponies and it was a great yard. I had to move as the distance did get to be too much. (took 15 minutes to get there).
They are now 2 miles away and on a superb yard. (now takes 5 minutes to get there) and its on my way to work 5 days a week.

I voted for less than 5 on DIY purely because my recent experiences have taught me I can't rely on always having transport, so I'd want to be able to walk there, be capable of doing all the jobs for both whilst there and then walking back without collapsing on the floor in a heap.

In reality my two are about 14 miles away but are on a fabulously reliable full livery yard so if I can't ever get there I don't need to worry about them. I wouldn't even contemplate that on DIY unless there was the option of full services in the event of a problem, but with the cost of fuel these days at that distance full livery is by far my most cost and time effective solution, even though I would like to look after them myself.

We've not left the village for a yard, and currently one horse is a 2 minute walk up the road and the other 2 are about a mile from our house.

I suppose that the facilities we require are minimal- stables and fields... The school/ horsewalker/ etc thing isn't important at all, as my sister's job is with horses so she can ride during the day. Boxing up to lessons/ use a school is no difficulty either. So really, the closer the yard the better :D

Used to drive 18 miles each way twice a day for 3 years in the end we moved house so we could stay at the same yard. Gained 3 hours a day and quality of life much improved for everyone.
