Hi

Just wondered if anyone else had a horse that had locking stifles? My mare is 6 years old and has always had locking stifles, she has been fine and not really caused a problem until earlier this year and after trying most things including fittening hill work, wedged shoes and chiropractor we finally resorted to surgery to cut the ligaments as she was not sound and constantly weight shifting on her back legs. She also started napping and biting when I tried to tack her up. Unfortunately there was a complication during this routine surgery and she ended up having a GA which whilst she was under they diagnosed DJD in her stifle joints.

I just wanted to know whether anyone else has a horse with DJD in the stifle joints and if so whether they are being ridden and living a fairly normal life? She is currently on one month's box rest followed by 3-4 months rest and then only time will tell if she will be ok to be ridden. I can't seem to find much information about this so any advice would be gratefully received.

Many thanks in advance.

Can't give much help re the djd, but we had a 2 yr old with locking stifles. She had the op that year under a g a as far as I remember and has been perfect since. She is now 6.

Yes we've had the op done on a Welsh Cob, both stifles at the same time, very successful. The op was done under local anasethic (can't spell it), standing, at home

Can't comment on the DJD though, sorry, but I would not breed off your mare if I were you

Thank you for your replies and good to hear your positive outcomes.

I agree with you about not breeding from her, my vet said the same thing which is such a shame as she is the most lovely mare but not worth the risk.

Thanks again
