what do you think to the use of DMSO? do you think it is harmful to horse's health? will it have side effects? like i was told it would make horse's hair fall out and skin blister.

ive used it in conjunction with a tendon sheath injury, no hair fell out, and no blistering of the skin. horse did however deffinatly feel it being applied. (was applied in 5mls so a tiny amount too. )

Have recently used DMSO combined with Dexamethasone on a bony lump (not a splint according to vet) on our 16.2 WB's nearside hind outer canonbone.Vet said this was an injury and after xrays advised this treatment which i applied for two weeks until Vet reviewed the horse and satisfied with his progress said it could be discontinued.Horse had no adverse reactions and did not mind it being applied at all.In fact i could do this with him untied in the field.Vet thinks the lump has reduced and there is no heat to the affected area.I have never used DMSO before so not sure about the longer efficacy.

It's pretty grim stuff (an industrial solvent) and used alone is probably not worth it tbh. I used it in the dim and distant past for a splint, it didn't have any effect really and now I'm older and wiser I wouldn't use it again on it's own. Some horses may well get skin reactions to it, mine didn't.

It's main use is as a carrier for topical steroid application and does therefore have it's use if combined with steroid.

what do you think to the use of DMSO?
Useful to get steroid drugs into the horse via the skin (but is most dangerous to human health when it contains these), and as an IV anti-inflammatory in the hands of vets.

do you think it is harmful to horse's health?
In typical topical doses, no - it's not very toxic at all.

will it have side effects? like i was told it would make horse's hair fall out and skin blister.
I wouldn't have thought so. At least, I haven't seen anything like that. However, I would stop using it at any sign of skin irritation. If horses are anything like humans, the horse may notice a garlicky taste in its mouth but that shouldn't worry it too much. (In high doses, e.g. 50cc IV, the whole horse will smell of garlic!)
