I own a 11 yrs Branded British Warmblood mare (bay in sig) I have recently imported from the UK to Norway, she has no breeding history or papers and a basic passport with no birth date or past history prior to 2005.

I earlier posted here and a DNA test was suggested to try and find her breeding and registration with BWBS. I had the mare 5 stage vetted only 2 months ago and have bloods on file in the UK can these bloods be used for a DNA test and if so can anyone tell me how much this process is likely to cost?

Does anyone have any success stories on tracing breeding or paper in this way/is it worth doing or just an expensive goose chase?

Your thoughts and experiences good or bad would be very well received, thanks in advance...

you could only get DNA tested, if you think you know who the Sire & Dam names, and also if they are held with The studbook. If you have this information, then this is the route you should take.

Have you tried tracing the breeder via the brand? perhaps they could give you an idea of likely parents. The problem is registries are not set up to compare DNA on their databases to find unknown parents, they only compare known samples for compatibility.

The Animal health Trust in the UK do DNA testing from blood samples and a few years ago it cost about £60 for my TB. You would have to check on the blood in case any preseratives used affect the DNA result.

Bearing in mind the very limited number of bay filly foals that wil have been branded by the BWBS in 1997 (both parents have to be fully graded in order to be eligible for branding which cuts down numbers a great deal) it should be fairly easy to identfy which one the mare is from her ID silhoute (eg if she has three whute socks, s snip and a star she could well be the ONLY BWBS-branded bay filly born in 1997 with those markings) and then use hair samples (not bloods) to check her ID. Please PM me for details of the best person for you to contact in the BWBS about sorting this out as they can be a bit offhand if confronted with an enquiry that is out of the ordinary if theyare not approached in the right way.

BTW, where did you import her from?
