Hi All

Numpty question i am sure but i am trying to trace my horses breeding. I have it all sorted on her sires side but all I know about her dam was she was a Dutch Warmblood who came over from Holland on a Ferry without a passport. Rumour has it she was a retired dressage mare.

The dam is still alive at a ripe old age but I have never met her!

I had a DNA test for her sire and this was easy as he was an ID and the IDSH was brilliant in helping me out.

I guess my question is does anyone know if there is a similar database that I could test against for her dam? I did email KWPN but they said no. I guess 'Dutch Warmblood' is a massive 'pool' to search across!

Apologies i have gone all 'who do you think you are' :) only in horse terms!!

thanks so much in advance x

It is possible they only have records for pure breds and not for older mares. I think the size of the database is not a factor.

KWPN do DNA test all foals now but if mare is that old and has not had foals I doubt she has ever been tested.

There is also the NRPS stud book on the Netherlands, not sure if they DNA test or not.

How old is the mare - if she is REALLY elderly then she should be branded. Younger 'models' are microchipped - you may be able to track her through a microchip number

Only KWPN foals born outside of Holland are routinely DNA tested so its not like they have a database of every horse.

The KWPN use DNA testing to confirm a horse's identity. If you have no idea who she is, then DNA testing won't tell you, however if you think you do know who she is, then DNA testing can check that.

If she was imported in the last 5 years or so then she will have to have been microchipped. If you could, I would ask her present owners to get the vet to check her with a scanner next time they are out. Then you have a bit more to go on...

Best of luck

Also if she came over on a boat she has to have had vet clearance and official forms, even if it was a few years ago. These papers HAVE to list a point of departure, ie horse trader or such like. If you can find out about these papers and possibly get a copy then I can help you track down the information on this side of the pond.
Find out if the mare has a brand (good tip by the way to determine before when she was born) and any other information you can find.

KWPN will not help you at all (are quite notorious about this) unless you provide all the data. But as you have no name, registration number or inkling of pedigree you can definitely forget any assistance from the KWPN.
