is it possible to get a DNA test done for a horse that you dont know the parentage of? Assuming that one/both of the parents are registered and DNA tested.

Horse I was wondering breeding of is mainly TB.

See i would be reallyinterested in knowing this too! I do know that weatherbys dna test all foals to check parentage. But i guess it costs a bomb

tbh I think you can only test when you know the parent, otherwise you would have to compare your horses DNA to all the horses that are on record??? If it is possible I would think it would cost a fortune....

Hi I looked in to this to find out the breeding of my conn x, the man I got him from knew the mare (mum of mine) who was ment to be by a fab conny stallion. What I would have had to do was, send of sample of my gelding to test against a sample from the mare then if that said 'yes' then test her against the said stallion. Easier said than done. The mare is 20 odd and in a field somewhere in Monaghan with no paper because the man who owns her didn't register her as a foal. would have been interesting but my pony stands well on his stamp with or without breed papers. Also wanted to find history on caspian pony my dad has, contacted relevent breed societys, she might have papers as they had two mares on their books about her age that they don't know where they have gone but didn't follow it up as doesn't matter to him what she is, she has a home for life. Basically you could spend a fortune and be no better off.

If you think you know the stallion and it is registered then you can get your horse checked against it's DNA. I bought one of my youngsters from a dodgy woman who bred loads of horses and she said that he was by a particular stallion, the mare wasn't registered so I had to get some hair (tail) samples from my boy (the vet had to rip them out, only a few) and then they were sent off to the SHB with I think £45 and luckily for me he was by the stallion in question, due to having this test done I could actually have this noted on his passport too. I don't think that they can check everyone on the database but then they might if it is just like a search on a computer?

I had my boy DNA tested. He's a TB and I'd heard he'd raced but didn't know much more than that. Didn't have a clue who he was. I spoke to Weatherbys who sent me a testing kit. Cost about £60 I think. My vet took the blood and filled in a markings form and it was all sent off. Came back really quickly. The lady I spoke to at Weatherbys was really friendly and helpful. I have been able to find out who my horse was, his parentage, get a DVD of him racing, all sorts. I'd say go for it. i think it was worth every penny!

You would have to know the parents to have the DNA matched. In the word of a vet when I asked a imilar question
"I highly doupt you can have it done, and if you can it will be extortianate"
So most likely not even if your willing to pay out
