Hey everyone,

I was wondering if DNA testing can be done to identify a horses parentage? I bought my horse from someone who bought him from someone in Ireland and his parentage is unknown... can this be done, if so how and where?

Appreciate any comments! :)

Hi there.

I have been told that you can be but you need to have an idea of who parents are so they can test against that particular DNA. I have the same issue. Wanting to get proof of sire but not aware which it is as guy i bought him off never gave me this info, kept saying he would get back too me and never did.

do you have an idea of dam/sire??

We wanted to have our mare's DNA tested, but as has been previously said they need someone to compare the results against - unless you think you know the dam or sire then you will probably end up wasting your money - and you may have to pay for the DNA testing of the possible dam or sire if the owners give their permission

Just a thought but we ended up finding our our mare's breeding through her microchip - it wasn't easy and took a lot of time searching through the internet for listings of microchip companies (She is dutch) but eventually found out all about her.

Good luck.
