...and insure your horse with a separate insurer for vets fees, loss of use etc and not include public liability on the policy?

Have I been missing a trick?!

Yes thats what I do, horse is insured with KBIS but with no public liability insurance and then I am a Gold member of BHS which gives me the public liability insurance. The annual BHS fee is cheaper than adding public liability to my KBIS policy :)

I have done this for the first time this year. The premium was just under £60 and I saved £150 on my NFU policy., so as they say ... it was worth it.

If you get a quote from SEIB, they actually ask you if you have BHS or BHS Riding Club membership.

I don't use BHS for it, but I use BD (I wanted the mag!) for 3rd party as I have cancelled my NFU insurance as the price was just getting silly.

Then I am missing a trick! It was going to be £60 quid each extra for public liability for both my two, and BHS membership is only £59 something...

I do but please be aware that your excess is £1k and that they will expect you to claim on any other insurance available before you claim from them.

It'll save you from being made bankrupt/losing your house if your horse causes a serious RTA but you'll probably have to pay most of the bill if it kicks a car...

I always think of it as being like 3rd party car insurance, you're legal but if in an accident you'll have work to do unlike fully comp where it'll all be sorted out for you.

Snap, but I have just worked out that the BSJA club membership offers £3 million PL for £30/year so when mine's due I think I'll swap to that and might get out and do some jumping too :D

1k excess for bhs gold is a bit much, even though it's £59
Petplan will insure my flighty Tb for £112 public liab only and have a £65 excess.

Yes, that's exactly what I do.

I also don't bother with tack cover on my horse's policy, to keep the premiums down.

This is incorrect. There is NO excess on the BHS public liability policy - you are getting confused with the one which comes automatically with BD/BE/BS where the excess is £1K (making it in my mind not worth having).

The excess on that policy is £1K, so be aware of that before you swap. There is no excess on the BHS cover.

Wow, I didn't realise that. I tried to have a good read up but i obv missed that bit. I don't suppose you have a link to the BHS info?

It's not online - I specifically asked them to confirm the excess when I signed up for BHS membership. Don't have any of my paperwork to hand I'm afraid as it's in a box after moving house! If you ring them, or SEIB, then I am sure they will confirm that (either that or I was sold a dummy!).

Shall do, thank you!
I went for bd as it was cheaper, and from what I had read seemed equal to the BHS one, but I obv missed a rather important aspect!

BE/BD/BS keep VERY quiet about the £1K excess, but believe me, that is what it is - and you only find out when you try and make a claim. Someone put a post on the BE forum asking why it wasn't made clear (they had to pay out several hundred pounds after their horse damaged a parked car, and obviously thought they had public liability cover) - BE never bothered to answer.

SC is right, there is definitely no excess on BHS PL cover as I had to put forward a claim recently (although nothing came of it in the end and it was cancelled).

I used to do this. Had public liability with BHS company KBIS and NFU everything else. Then my horse had an accident and completely demolished a wall at my old yard.
Despite my best efforts on what should have been a straightforward claim, they would not pay out.
I had to pay out about £950+ for the wall and promptly took public liability out with NFU, who are very good at paying claims in my experience.

I wouldn't make that mistake again!

Be aware that as a result of a recent court case that one needs third party public liability cover of £10,000,000 (Ten Million Pounds) and it would appear that the BHS Gold membership is the only one that offers it to this level of cover.

Yes I have public liability and personal accident with the BHS for both myself and my husband, vet fees and mortality cover with KBIS and tack and rugs are covered by the home contents insurance.

BHS cover is great because you get a high level of public liability with no excess plus the legal helpline and the personal accident cover. It also gives you the same level of cover if you are riding someone else's horse with permission, so if heaven forbid you were riding a friend's horse and something happened and their insurance didn't cover it you would be ok.
