Do Chihuahuas need to wear clothes?

No they don't.
They may need a coat when out in the cold, standing around like greyhounds or any tiny or thin coated breed but clothes - no.

does it really matter in the big scheme of things?
Stick your chihauhua in a pink tutu and put a ribbon on its head if thats what floats your boat, not my kind of thing ..........but it takes all sorts.

Oops, I meant coats, no idea why I typed 'clothes'! I've always had whippets and I use indoor coats for cold nights and thicker, lined ones for when they are out in their run in winter. I am guessing Chihuahuas might have similar needs? I've never owned one before and am just trying to get as much info as possible. Obviously if I go to some websites it will tell me that pink tutus are a necessity but I want the real facts :)

P.s. I should add that I have no issue with Chihuahuas in clothes (and I do mean clothes this time!) providing they fit well and don't upset the dog in any way. My whippets always dress up for family gatherings, well for at least five seconds before they wiggle out of their antlers etc.

My friend's chihuahua is a strong adherent of naturism, she won't even wear the little Rambo rug my friend bought her for cold/wet/windy days.

Fair enough. My dogs have always accepted their various coats without any problems but I wouldn't force them if they really hated wearing them :) In winter they know that coats = walkies so they positively leap into them then!

I have a papillon so not far off a chihuahua and yes in the winter or when it's raining she wears a variety of waterproof or warm coats as she has thin skin and only a single coat.

Thanks NP. I've not actually got my pup yet but I want to do my best for her when she arrives. I've never actually seen a coat small enough for a chihuahua, probably because I've never looked, ha ha, but they must exist.

My neighbour has a miniature Chihuahua. We have temps of -30c in the winter and that little dog does not own a coat. It whizzes around and seems quite content out in any temperatures. I am not a person who would choose to have my dogs wearing clothes, however I don't see anything wrong with it to keep the pup warm on a cold day.

Thanks SF :) Maybe I'll be lucky and end up with a hardy little thing too! My whippet girls would shiver like crazy without theirs in the winter. On all but the coldest days I take their coats off after 10 mins or so of walking, depending how fast they've been charging up and down but they definitely need them at nights when it's cold.

The nearest pet shop to me has doggy dresses galore. The prices are eye-watering for such tiny scraps of tulle and ribbon!! All I was looking for was to see if they did little coats for colder weather but they don't. Mind you I probably wouldn't be able to afford them even if they did. The puppies are very expensive here too.

I'm in Madrid but I'm coming back to the UK (East Yorks) in a couple of weeks. I've spoken to a couple of breeders but one only had dogs and I think my whippet girl will get on better with another girl. The other breeder sounded very nice and she's having another litter this summer.

It's a shame you are not nearer to Essex my friend has a litter of 3/4 breds and 2 bitches. My daughter has bought one if the boy pups who will be ready in 2 weeks, they are so beautiful.

I used Friday fox for coats when my pap was a teeny puppy as they do a couple of coats in 10inches which should fit a full grown chihuahua and they are quite smart rather than silly (waxed Barbour style coat and a duffle style with a sheepskin lining)

My chi needs a coat outside in winter, otherwise not.
I've had a hell of a job finding sensible well fitting coats. Plenty of tutu's, dresses, hats, sunglasses and jewellery etc !!!!!
I did find some really basic knitted pull on woollies as small as 10" on amazon. Really cheap, about a fiver. Great for cold days, but useless if raining. Still trying to find a waterproof that fits and does not reduce us both to laughing stocks.

Do let me know if the breeder you have spoken to doesn't have anything when you return - our Chis' came from a super breeder about an hour from you.

To answer your original question - absolutely yes - all of ours have little knitted jumpers with the our racing colours - they're like a mini fan club :)
