I know, i know it's not winter yet ! But i need a HW turnout and figured now would be best time to buy... also want one that doesn't rub out the mane that's taken all summer to grow back

So half neck rugs?

I have a Rhino Wug and it doesn't rub my mare , however she has quite a skinny neck and isn't cresty in any way. I normally use standard neck (no neck cover) rugs.

I've personally found that all half neck rugs I've bought for ours have rubbed them but haven't had any problems with full neck ones which a lot of people do seem to!? x

YES!!! Last year my welshie had a beautiful mane... Then put a half neck on over winter, seemed ok but one weekend came up and loads had rubbed out!!! Gutted

Usually they rub some out! If your horse has hair to spare it should be ok (at least it stops them getting quite so muddy) But if like mine your horse has a thin mane, then unfortunately it may result in your horse (like mine) adopting the bald eagle look!

I find that his mane is fine with a neck then as soon as he goes out with no rug when warm enough he roles & it must be all loose coz then it all breaks off :-(

I've got a couple of Rhino wugs & love them, they're great rugs. Never had any probs with them rubbing, also had a WB half neck yrs ago & that never rubbed.

I don't think it's rubbing, so much as overheating or damp destroying the hair root. I have watched people take out plaits and seen the whole plait come away in their hands at the root. Some horses are OK, some have such thick hair that it's a bonus because you don't have to pull the bottom half of the mane, and some just go completely bald. I don't use half or full necks because of it.

I also think that pressure is involved. If you tried to put your hand up the neck cover when my mare was grazing, it was impossible. The area from the withers to about half way down her neck was so, so tight with her head low. When she had her head up it was loose. This half of her neck was also the area that lost the mane.

I have a Shires Highlander combo for my chunky cob mare, and its fantastic. She's now hogged, but before that it didn't rub any of her mane out at all.
It cost £40 from Burghley and will be used for its 4th winter this year, on my rug wrecking youngster, as its starting to look a bit tatty where cobby mare rubbed her bum on a tree and we had to patch it up. But I'm definitely buying another one for madam, its been brilliant and is the perfect fit for my little moo cow :D

Horses dont need a neck cover!!! Its just another gimmick designed to make you spend money.

They wont melt from getting wet neck/mane - so long as their back and loins are covered if its very wet and cold they will be fine. They need their manes in summer for midge protection so dont bother rubbing them out over winter!

Hmm i am very tempted to just buy a rug for him with no neck cover at all to be honest!

He's a welsh cob so hoping would be fine in the depths of winter with no neck cover and a clipped neck? I suppose once his mane has grown back it would cover at least one side of his neck anyway!?

True! I had my welsh cob out with a m/w or h/w neckless rug When it was -10 and snowing a couple of years ago. He was fine and nice and toasty under his rug. He was fully clipped but had a long mane that flipped over both sides :)

After years of trying all sorts from mega expensive to cheap rugs, from all necks to half necks, seamed to no seams I have gone back to normal no neck rugs and have no problems with natives losing manes. I will never forget the day when I took our palamino stallions rug off and a six inch wide piece of mane came too. !

I'd only buy no neck now if I was buying, horses managed fine before with no neck rugs, my poor hold went bold last year coz of it
