Do Hanoverian's make good hunters? Any experiences to report?

I am in the process of buying an all-rounder horse which I would use for hunting as well. I have come across a few good looking Hanoverians at good prices and was wondering if anyone could comment on their experiences with this breed on the hunting field?

My first choice would be an ISH but want to keep my options open.

Any advice??
 
I have a hanno x tb (branded belgian warmblood) - I haven't hunted him, but I believe he hunted in the past as well as doing BD, BE & BSJA so I think they are pretty versatile. The only thing I would say is in my experience, they are all very hot, so I should imagine hunting them would be err fun :-)

Don't worry I went shopping for an ISH and ended up with a warmblood :-)
 
i'm not sure you can generalise but the only Hanoverian i know that hunted only lasted 2 meets as it was totally stupid, no common sense or self preservation!

i would keep looking for an ISH if i were you, but i prefer them anyway.
 
Porridge (who now belongs to Ethel_Rumpington on here) was part Hanno (full up warmblood tho) and she is an absolutely fantastic hunter!

Thing is there is no one breed that is guaranteed good for hunting - best just buy a horse that HAS hunted if it is important to you :) I know IDs and ISH that are dreadful hunters!
 
I have a arab x hanovarian havent hunted her as of yet but i have done hunter trials events, sponsered rides, showjumping with her and is brilliant wouldnt have any other horse!! the only thing of a trate of a hanovarian is that they can be stubborn but are very intelligent!!
 
I had a Hannovarian cross - many years ago - I know a non CB, but she looked like one - Now though of course the only thing I will hunt is a CB - Donks goes all day and loves it - Buck due to the weather and moving this winter did sadly not get out to test his wings!

Extremely but also very affectionate once they get to know their owner, Mine is about 3/4 hanno so I could put some of it down to the oldenburg etc extremely cheeky and nosey but lovely. I think they do have a tendancy to get silly ive only ever experienced that on the ground with him though, he can set himself to get upset and thats it. looks straight ahead and doesnt take in anything around his little strop.

They arent all the same obviously but I think he is a typical to type. :)
 
I wouldn't discount any breed for hunting personally. I had a hanno xwelsh mare a few years ago that was a good hunter. She didn't have the brain to be a great hunter.

Many, many moons ago I hunted a fantastic hannoverian gelding, who was built like a brick ***thouse & really should have been Irish to look at. He wasn't the fastest thing in the world but there wasn't a fence that was too big & he was a real gent.

The only problem was that his name was Abdicate and his nickname was dick, which caused much amusement when I was riding him.

Yep can vouch Porridge is a super hunter. My last Han/TB was a sandwich short of a picnic though - wouldn't have fancied hunting him :)
 
I hunted a Han x Selle Francais... fantastic horse, big jump, good stamina, could be over excitable to start the day, but never sick or sorry and turned his hoof to anything outside hunting season
