Am considering getting my boy a fly rug - as his new field is next to a lake and the 'small' fly population is immense!!

My main concern is a) what type of rug - have looked at the Amigo Bug Rug.

and b) Will he sweat? - He is an EXTEMELY hot horse as it is!!

Anyone get a sweaty horse in a bug rug?

My boy was out all last summer in a an amigo bug rug, and was fine in it. BEcause it is silver, it almost seems to refklect sunlight so he stayed quite cool in it...

Also we have tiny weeny flies - does it stop them getting in??

I got to Jags this morning and the flies had crawled up his rug to his armpits!!

Mine is in a boett rug and doesn't seem to be sweating at all - apparently the rugs have a shading effect (as the sunlight not directly on their skin) and if anything sweat less with a rug on.

Also agree - white/ light coloured will reflect the light better

[/ QUOTE ]Thanks hun - again does it stop ALL flies getting to the body??

Boett is very good as is especially for midges - Reg gets sweet itch and it covers almost every bit - the fit is very snug.

Mine seems to stop all flies and they give you extra bits of material so you can adapt yours if you find your horse has a bit that needs protecting that isn't covered.

But - they are not cheap....

And - if yours doesn't have sweet itch maybe a cheaper fly rug a good option too?

Just posted about this rug in another thread but I highly recommend it. http://www.derbyhouse.co.uk/prodshow.asp?id=2126&cat=2&scats=48,89 Has helped my boy no end and he HATES flies (would only stay out 5mins before hes running around and going mad) and only has to look at the sun to sweat - bless him

Its white and is nice and soft but tight weave and has helped him no end. Also belly flap helps them stop going under his tummy and near his "bits"

I've stoped using one on my black horse as all I have tried make him sweat up like anything even the bug rug.

Personally find he is less bothered with loads of fly spray and no rug

No probs, only thing I will say is it doesnt offer as much protection as a rug with a belly flap, but tbh nothing bit G on his stomach, just his willy (

) and his armpits, which arent covered by anything! But for the money, fitted alot better than the masta and weatherbeeta ones....

[/ QUOTE ]Hmm thankies... it's the armpits/belly that seem to be attracting the flies most!!

Same prob i have with my boy, and because fly rug fabric is softer than "normal" rugs, they tend to slip back and then get tight on their necks....

[/ QUOTE ]You see this is why I was more tempted with the Amigo as the 'normal' rugs fit slightly better than WB ones.... argh!!!

It is difficult, but by the sounds of things J is the same shape as G! Hmmm, have you seen the cheapo Derby house ones?! Theyre meant to be very good for the money.... But even with belly wraps their armpits still get eaten... Nettex summer fly cream is excellent for putting on fly bites and sore areas (eg armpits) and protects against flies too.... also the new NAf Deet spray works very well....

[/ QUOTE ]Hmmmm - yeah - I have been applying fly repellent/cream/gel etc.. but these little flies don't care about it!!

They just carry on as they wish!!

After a nightmare summer last year, I have invested in an Amigo Bug Rug and am really pleased with it. I was quite impressed yesterday that my horse's coat felt cool to touch under the rug, much cooler than her face which was exposed. To counteract the lack of a belly cover, I have invested in some more expensive fly spray for just that area and am feeding lots of garlic too. So far, so good!

My horse has a rambo/horseware ireland fly sheet that is a couple of yrs old. The material is white but quite thick, which helps stop biting insects bite through the material. BUT he does get hot in it. I would not put it on him on a day like today. In the summer he is mostly out at night so I will use it then. In the meantime I use a fly mask and coopers green repellent which is excellent.
I was thinking of trying something less thick TBH.

My horse is black and really suffers in the heat and also cant stand the flies so I bought a Rambo Flybuster 2 yrs ago. Its still going strong and he feels cool underneath it. He has sweated at the front where the nylon shoulder lining is but that was when it was roasting last year. Im not keen on the material as it feels plasticky but it has stood up to his rug thug friend. This year hes on his own after a nasty accident so Im thinking of buying a Rambo Protector. Tried the Amigo bug rug but it didnt fit round his neck.

You can 'train' a horse to wear pretty much any rug in the summer

I've been purposefully cooking my horse earlier with a rain sheet so he can stand higher temps with his sweet itch kit. Acclimatisation is the name of the game.

[/ QUOTE ]Oh no.... so he may get hot in it!? grrrr - well I guess I'm getting the 'Dust Sheet' which also acts as a fly sheet so maybe the material will be lighter?!

weatherbeeta rugs are good for warmbloods, ingatstone saddlery give great advice and said that they are good shape for warmbloods. some mindless info for you guys.

[/ QUOTE ]Thanks for the info - shame he isn't a warmblood!! LOL!!

I think what I have is a flybuster. The material is think and as he has grown there is less room for air to circulate under it - hence I think why he can sweat in it on very hot days. If I get another this yr I am going to get something with thinner material (probably a weatherbeeta) so I can compare the two.
Not sure how the newer Rambo/horseware rugs will vary to the one I own. What I would say is they are tough and last well.

I have the weatherbeater ones for mine.
I clipped winston out all last summer, and have a feeling i will be doing the same again thsi year esp on snoop.
Bertie wears a canvas white NZ rug - this is heavier but keeps him cool - and hes very dark bay.

He sufferes more than the others - flies included, but seems quite happy with his weatherbeata

My horse suffers badly with the flies and he wears a Rambo protector 24/7 in the summer, he wore it all last summer which was really hot with no ill effects, its strong yet comfortable and has a belly flap, and doesnt slip back on him like alot of cheaper fly rugs, would recommend it!
