Do 'horse wanted' adverts work?

Am seriously considering advertising for a horse as I've been having trouble finding the 'right one' for me. It's not from want of trying either, I spend most days browsing and re-browsing the adverts, phoning and trying horses. And I'm definitely very serious about purchasing. But my budget's not huge (4.5-5K) so am looking at 4-5 year olds ready to bring on but I always seem to find the sane horses have sold by the time I can get there as I work full time and struggle to travel.

I've never advertised a 'horse wanted' type ad before and wondered if anyone had done so with any success? Or am I just likely to get hounded with all the dross I've sorted through all ready?
 
I did a wanted ad and it worked

did have a few people trying to sell me some nutty sounding horses and of course they were all priced at the top of my stated budget

I if were u i would advertise but dont be surprised if every one who calls horse is £5k as they obviously want the best price

i posted on here a while back re wanted ads and would anyone respond to them- the gen replies was no they are normally to specific!

Thanks. Sounds like it's not worth the hassle then.

Am gobsmacked at the variety in pricing at the moment - some are okay and realisitc, but some of the prices people are asking for very ordinary horses at the moment are shocking. I don't remember it being like this last year when the economy was good.
 
Where are you? What height do you want? I know of 2x 4 yr old in Gloucestershire which are ready to bring on, within your budget. PM me if you're not too far away!
 
It did for me!

Mother put an advert in the local paper saying that she wanted a schoolmaster for me (vague on age, height etc) and a lady phoned up who owned Blackjack. Years later we still own him and he was perfect for me in every way.

It's worth a try!
 
I agree - it worked for us looking for a competing livery, although we did get timewasters too. I replied to a H&H Wanted ad when I was selling; it was about noon on Thurs and the girl said I was no. 49 to ring!

For this reason, I would not state a budget, instead put something like 'must be reasonably priced' or 'no silly prices please.'
 
horsemart is good i got lots of horses offered to me when i put one up some were ok others were really bad its always worth a try
 
they have worked for me in the past. I wouldnt put a budget on though, otherwise people will prob 'up' their price a bit if it wasnt at the top end to start with!

You will get some 'funny' replies but its all fun! What i tend to do is ask them to email 1st with photos, its narrows it down easier as its not ideal when someone calls you when you are in the middle of something, offering a horse that is not to your requirements, and they wont stop going on about how brill it is and that you should really view them etc!

Definately. I wrote a wanted ad on Horsemart and got tonnes of replies. Most of the replies were from people that didn't want to just put their horse on a website and wait to see which tom, dick or harry turned up to view it, they wanted to ensure they'd chosen the right person for their horse.

I wrote a lot about me and what I'd want from a horse and got some great replies. In the end I didn't buy a horse that I'd found as a result of my wanted ad, but that isn't any reflection on the results I had from it. I found the sellers a lot more pleasant and chatty than those who I'd just contacted through a 'for sale' ad.

Definately don't put a budget. Just describe what you are looking for in as much detail as possible, that way people will have to be honest about the price.
