Hi there,

Perhaps a silly question for someone who has been involved with horses for 22 years!
But I have a friend who has a 5 year old gelding and he has a crusty looking lump in-front of his sheath. I wasn't sure if this might be a belly button that has got a bit crusty?
Also, he has some small warty like spots on his sheath, but I didn't think these were too much of a problem?

Thanks!

Jess

bless ! yes they do have a belly button. Is his sheath dirty or spotty ? If flaky and dirty follow one of the many threads on here about cleaning - if spotty has be been bitten by flies - if not maybe call a vet or ask an experienced friend to have a look.

My mare has an obvious belly button. I didn't know what it was and actually questionned it at the vetting thinking it was a sarcoid only the be very embarrased when the vet pointed out it was her belly button. My other 2 don't have obvious belly buttons and I don't think I've ever noticed one before!

hahaha i thought my mares was a sarcoid as well until i thought about it :)

Me too :o

Had a few heart stopping seconds when I found it, then common sense prevailed (I did google though just to check!) - this was some years ago when I first got her, although I'd ridden for years I'd never thought about belly buttons in the RS/when I was a sharer!

In all the time I've been around horses I've never ever wondered this haha. Good question op :)

I'll be checking my horse tomorrow!

she must have an 'outy' and the others have 'innys' :D

Mine does and bizarrely when he was vetted the vet made me feel it as he said it's quite pronounced and some people might mistake it for a lump so worth me knowing what it felt like/its size etc.

He must have! As someone said, all mammals have them!! Maybe it's like with my cat - you could just see a little circle on my old cat's tummy, but I can't see anything on this one's! I will have a look at H later!!

My boy also has an outy belly button. I pointed it out to the vet who confirmed it was his belly button. It just feels and looks like a small raised lump.

Thank you everyone for all your help!
He had his vaccs and teeth done today and the vet had a quick look.
It was just a bit of crusty yucky stuff, so nothing to worry about!
Yyay!
He really liked him too!!
