Lost my cob suddenly in Jan - he was only 7. My daughter's pony has adapted well to being on his own but I do feel guilty that he's lonely although he's getting ridden loads :-)

I am missing riding and have been looking for another horse on and off - started out looking for an exact replica of the cob I lost (15.2hh), then started looking for another pony to keep Zac company (10.2hh) now looking for a 14hh cob that I could possibly ride that would also work as a mother/daughter share going forward. Arrrgh! So confused...

Is this a mad idea? I weight 10 stone - could I do short rides on a chunky 14hh?
 
Sorry about your cob, that's so sad at just 7 :(

How tall are you? If you're quite tall, why not go for a 14.2hh? would take your daughter up to horses and perhaps be a bit more your size too, though I'm sure a decent 14hh cob would carry you with ease :)

Thanks both :-) I am 5' 7" and know I might look a bit silly on a 14hh but it will be easier to get on and off to attend to my daughter plus it's not so far to fall!!

Have seen one for sale nearby - may well go and try him. When we were looking for my last horse, my OH fell about laughing when I tried a 14.3hh. I don't think I'll take him with me this time ;-)
 
Keep looking but maybe widen your options a bit - the right one will find you. Don't worry so much about the height as it's more important that the personality fits in with you
 
Your weight would be fine, just be mindful that the saddle you need to accommodate your leg is not too long for the cob if it is short coupled. If the cob can only take a 16 or 16 1/2'' saddle, you may have a problem.
It isn't necessarily related to the height of the horse but its something to bear in mind when viewing.
 
Im so sorry you lost your boy. You sound about the same size as me, I have a 13.3 fjord, you'll be fine :)

I dont know if this helps, i'm 5'10" and a bit and regularly did low level endurance rides on a 14hh connemara (of the stocky variety) - we didnt look at all odd...so sure you'll be fine on something of that size!
 
My daughter was 5' 6" and went back to her 14.1 pony after university when we lost our 16hh horse, she competed in RC events, cross country open comps etc. and the pony loved it.

So do not worry - it is about how a pony feels to ride, and that you feel good on it rather than exact height etc.

Fjord and Hedwards - have you got any pics? Am finding it hard to visualise a 14hh with me on it!
