do i even bother buying new rugs?

2 rugs in 2 days my boy has ruined!

went to being him in the other day and noticed his medium weight full neck (freezing and peeing down up here!) was ripped right along the side and a surcingle and the leg strap were gone. i was a bit miffed, but let him off since he's not normally one to trash rugs and i have one the exact same. so chucked the other one on and popped him back out.

next day, ripped the exact same way and straps off again :mad: theres a whole bunch of newbies out with him, although when ever i see my boy he's always himself, im wondering if one of them are pulling it off or something, fox hasnt ruined a rug the whole time ive had him..

i cant really leave him without, put him back out with the ripped one on using bale twine to improvise.. i need to get a new one as im not convinced that one will hold up more than a night! im going to be so annoyed if spend money on new rugs that will only last a night :(
 
I bought two recently on the bogof deal with Derby House. Turns out they're pretty good rugs (lightweights) have velcro on the surcingle bit so they don't tear. Been completely waterproof as well. Only need to last a season at that price (£60 delivered) I think they're doing it at £50 for 2 at the mo...
 
shmoo the rugs were both derby rugs!

kazza its a pain, hes never done this before, hope its not a new habit!
 
Oh I'm dreading my rug tomorrow as I let him out in the feild... Turned around then looked back at him... 1 of the belly straps got loose... Tried to get hold of him again but just cantered around and around and around I was there for a good half hour and still couldn't catch him. Just thank god it was only a cheap rug!
 
It is unlikely he is doing it to himself, poor horse is probably being hassled by the load of new horses with him, he is probably alone trying to keep out of the way of whichever one is biting him and ripping the rug, they may settle but if one horse does take a dislike to your boy the rug issues may continue.
It is worth spending plenty of time observing how they behave as a group as there could well be a bully that keeps him out of the herd, if he has been there longer he may feel left out and unsettled.
 
Feel your pain - when my two youngsters went through three rugs in a week I told them "you're naked until you grow up" They didn't wear rugs again till they were 4yr olds.

Is there possibly something he's rubbing up against? Mine found a nail slightly raised from the surface of the fence and ripped two of hers all along one side in exactly the same place.

If the sun comes out I today I will spend some time searching for the nail as she is due to go back into that paddock in a few days.

Hot Glue gun is your friend for small tears - ease a piece of fabric through the gap then some hot glue, squish together before it hardens and then run a line of glue along the cut. Has kept many of mine waterproof and fixed. Great for those tiny nicks.
