Whats the difference between paying somebody to come a few days and week and helping out with your horses to having someone paying you for the same thing?

I would like to start looking for someone to help out with my 3 horses, 2 of them need bringing to work soon and could do with help for one of them especially, who can be a handful - ie someone to walk out with me for a few days then eventually someone to hack out both my horses along side me, help out with my baby horse and some possible help at shows (they could compete too). I would be looking for a contribution toward hay and keep of £15 pw and maybe a bit toward shoeing too.......there are no other jobs, they all live out 24/7.
Does this sound like something someone would be willing to do or is it more like i need to pay someone to help me?!

Totally Depends........my sharer pays £80 a month plus shoes, has unlimited usage, lifts to shows and does not have to muck out ( but they do and help with other horses too.. ) private offroad hacking and a school with lights.

If you search past posts / threads some people pay for certain days and on those days they do everything and some people just want to help out even if no riding involved but obviously don't pay.

What I am saying is that different people have different requirements and I am sure you will find someone to help you.

In previous years when we werent in a depression I think you could get away with charging for sharing horses. Although nowadays everyone is short on money particularly the sort of people that want to share (uni students/teenagers and young mums etc). If you also want people to ride and help out I think you may have too accept that you might not get anyone wanting to pay for that privledge.

What about having a sharer but not charging any money - ie they do a few chores for a ride??? Most people are fairly happy to do that providing your horses are not too difficult and they are good rides.

My sharer now dosnt pay and has two horses she can ride in exchange for bringing them in/turning them out and mucking out if she is going up in the morning and riding. She will also be able to compete hopefully this year if horse stays sound. Ps £15 pw +contribution towards hay +shoes is a bit steep IMO. A few years ago i used to charge £100 pcm and they didnt have to do mucking out.

As they live out, aren't currently in work, one is a bit of a handful and you'll be there to supervise, I'd not be surprised if there is someone who would come and help/ride for free and you wouldn't need to pay. But for £15 plus shoe money, I don't think you'd get much interest TBH.

Reading your thread, i thought that you needed a part time groom more than a sharer. I think the difference is in how relaxed you can be with the agreement. If you need definate help on definate days in precise ways (which your post suggested) that are pretty much set in stone, and you don't want to be let down, then it sounds more like a job than a share.. A sharer should really have free rein over the horse on their days (within reason).

You may find someone to help with your horses in the way you require for no payment, but to expect them to pay to groom for you at shows etc sounds a bit cheeky. (Just my opinion!)

If you have a nice easy novice ride or a decent competition horse I think you can charge and expect some help. But they would expect to have days when they could ride and do what they wanted with the horse, not fit in with your plans.

If you have badly behaved or young horses which you are expecting someone to help you bring on, then I would expect you to pay them and not expect stable chores.

I personally wouldn't be keen on sharing something which lived out 24/7, but not everyone is the same

Good luck finding someone.
