I have nosed at a few post over the last few days, particularly about selling horses, and i have seen some comments that leads me to believe my horses must be a saint!

In 6 yrs he has never bucked or reared (ok buck twice both both time it was when you got on and he was in pain and under veterinary advice so i can forgive them) he doesn't bolt or nap, he will occasionally spook but they aren't "OMFG ITS GONNA EAT ME LETS RUN AWAY" spooks he is an angel to catch never had any trouble catching him. he doesn't have any vices (and i am not blinkered in saying this, my mare wood chews when overly stressed so i would say she has a vice)

Yes he has his bad points (like his need to see the vet every few months) so what do you think? is it normal for you average horse to buck/rear/nap/bolt or not be good to catch? have vices etc? or should i put my lad on the market for thousands :p

I have had several horses in the past but 2 stand out. They were honestly 200% in every way. Traffic, Hacking, travelling, shows. Both could do dressage xc and sj. Only prob with both was that it was easier to sedate for clipping as both very ticklish, otherwise 2 angels!!

I also have a saint horse (well pony!) He taught me to ride and rebuilt my confidence after the previous pony I had. Nevere ever once bolted, napped, bucked, reared etc. 100% to catch and lead by anyone, jumps the moon, but also knows his limit, so if the jump is too high, he gradually slows down into it instead of doing a nasty stop.

He is so good I still have him after 10years of being outgrown, and he has taught many other boys and girls how to ride, and is currently on loan and loving life at 24!

Just to ad, he does crib, but very rarely and doesn't damage wood or his teeth, but we let him off for being suck a saint :P

My youngster also doesnt nap, bolt, rear, buck etc. He bucked once in his life when I was breaking him in, he wanted to stay with his GF, and I said no were going on a hack, told him off, never tried since! Also 100% to catch, lead etc etc.

Both are ridden in happy mouth loose ring snaffles, no martingales, no flashes, just a standard caverson [=

I like my normal ponies :D

Good to appreciate them! I retired a very careful, sweet, eager to please, angelic mare, but didn't realise quite how lovely she was until I got a youngster and realised I was actually going to have to 'ride'!

Clever horse. Personally I would like to say this is normal - there are far too many "naughty" horses and these are the ones everyone talks about, people forget the well behaved "normal" horses.

He sounds like a super chap :)

I am a guilty party posting a thread about my new naughty horse. I would like to say though that its because I am comparing him to my other horse, who is indeed a saint horse. She has only ever done everything I have asked of her, never bolted, reared or napped. Her spook involves twitching an ear at said offensive object, once an entire herd of cows stampeded up behind her and she just watched them as they went past! She has bucked me off once, only due to sore back so completely forgiven!:D If you can help me find another one just like her to swap for my new devil horse, please PM me!!!

My horse seems to be quite the angel! He's very very good in the stable, aside from him constantly wanting to nibble my bum or arms, but he's only being cheeky/playing...

And he's only done one "bad thing" when I've been riding him, about two weeks after I got him - he freaked out when he trod on the mounting block and bronced me off... (he was 5 y/o when I bought him)

I taught him to do a turn on the forehand in hand (when I had sciatica and couldn't ride) when I tried it when I was riding he did exactly what I asked and did a very nice quarter turn on the forehand. When I asked him to try leg yielding he got very confused are we going forward or sideways?!?! but he stayed calm and kept going - he knows what "good boy" means now too! :)

He tripped really badly one day and nearly, nearly fell, when he got his feet under him I felt him coil himself up to rear, or bolt, or both - I patted him and said "whoaaaaa" and he instantly calmed down and stood still. There have been two other occasions when his first reaction was to freak out but he's stood still when I said "whoaaa".

Hi, yes you do own a saint horse. I ride one just the same each week but sadly he is not for sale, and I am thinking that this is why I find looking for a horse so difficult because I compare them all with him, so I have stopped looking at the moment until I address this issue. He is a little bit naughty but I see this as him being mr grumpy, some are put out by it but I adore him.:)

Yes it sounds like you do own a saint - and some days I wish my two weren't so "quirky" - but then to be honest, I think I would be bored if they were easy horses - they're not naughty to ride, just a bit stressy....and I like to know that when they are calm and going well, that I have achieved something..

ive always bought/loaned/riden the naughty one, by choice, as a child i loved the RS pony who bolted in the arena because when you got him going well it was really satisfying.
ive also had a bucking, bolter,
a 4 yo ex racer who i couldnt get on without a lot of help,
a 5 yo pony who bucked, bolted, reared, would stop on a hack and refuse to go forward (cue me getting off and walking 3 paces and getting back on),
a bolting rearer..
the list goes on.

personally that is just the type i like and often when the go well they go really really well. im not a big compeater (sp) (local shows etc) but i really love riding these horses and most of them have gone on to be amazing horses with very few or no vices! in fact one ex-racer i had on loan for 6 months or so has just been sold for over £6000 to event so it can bbe so rewarding!

it also helps that these 'naughty' horses are the ones people usually have to offer!!

i also dont think many people talk about saint-like horses because unless your going somewhere with it (ie OP has) then it just looks like your bragging :P sorry for the rambling!

we have a lovely cob, gorgeous to look at, fine to catch (can do anything to her and she wont budge) great for little kids and nervous riders as she'll just plod along and will hack out alone or in company. But you put an advanced rider on and she is fab - particularly for jumping. she absolutely loves it and is just such a sweetie. she is bomb proof definately. she will stand and be pulled about by kids all day, will stand and be clipped by anyone ( we run nvq's and she is the guinea pig for it!) she is just so gentle. so yeah, we have a saint horse :)

My first pony was a little angel: NEVER bucked, kicked, bit, or anything nasty. Didn't have a horrible thought in his head, not ever. You could have put someone's toddler up and asked him to go along a main road/through a busy town, or whatever, and he'd have taken them there safely. We used to have to hack through a busy, noisy, working quarry with lorries, huge machines, drills etc, and he'd walk right past it all without flinching; I lost count of how many times we were offered silly money for him, but he was worth his weight in gold, that's for sure. What a little darling, wish he was around now that's for sure.

The one I've got (traddy cob) is a really sweet boy: tho' is like a chamelion and can change his ride depending on who's on top. Basically the better the rider the more he'll act the fool, but with a novice (who doesn't make him do anything he doesn't want) he's a total dobbin/plod and is a sweet, gentle, chilled, laid-back guy. The other day a friend put her little girl up and we hacked around the lanes and a pr@t on a bike came up behind right up his @ss and he was fine about it, didn't spook at all, just plodded along.

But if I took him hunting, he'd be quite capable of going like a rocket all day and pulling like a train, and on a hack is quite capable of throwing in a little buck for good measure just to make sure I'm still awake on top.

Funny things horses, heh?

Mine is to :D well apart form a few issues with loading occasionally but they are well on the way to being sorted :D I love it we went on a 2 hour hack alone this morning and considering when I got him he had never hacked alone he is brill the only thing he was scared of was the electric gates at the coach depo that started as we went by but I will let him off as it is the first time he has seen them move and they are quite loud. He is fab for little kids and is great at teaching them to steer with their seat as he will listen to them completly even if their legs only just come off the saddle whilst keeping an eye on me to make sure he is doing the right thing. The only thing is it is a constant attempt to boost his confidence with every thing but it is on the way up and he tries so hard for me :D much love for my little pony <3<3

I own a saint of a horse.
She is sharp to ride and only I appear to be "allowed" to ride her. But she is good in traffic, doesn't nap, good to catch. Doesn't know what bucking or rearing with a rider on board is! No bolting either. Her only downfall is on the way home from a hack in company she can getabit joggy and she runs her teeth along the edge of her haybar when I don't give her enough attention :D

I hacked her out last week with a friend, she hasn't hacked all winter and hadn't been ridden in 3 weeks to due having tack isssued and my back was sore. All she did was jog home slightly, I was over the moon as to how well she behaved :D

Definately my horse of a lifetime!

Fany has never bucked, reared, kicked or bitten. She is as bombproof as any horse I have ever met. 100% in traffic, with strimmers/ ax grinders starting up near her in fact never shied at anything. She is excellent turned out with other horses. Good for vet and dentist, doesn't need tying up to have her teeth done. A dream to tack up and catch; an all round fab little girl. Only thing she doesn't do is jump. Well she can but it is very small and she does not enjoy it. Hacks alone and in any company and was going to do dressage last year but the weather was very wet and bad up here all summer. Loads and travels very well. Good to clip, bath and groom. An absolute angel with children, even had YO's 2 yo niece playing on her back.

Would say worth her weight in gold but not sure there is that much gold in the world :p

Her only problems are she is an extremely good doer and it is very hard to keep weight off her, and she leans on the farrier, which is naughty.
