I am considering competing next year with my old boy (he is 19 years young!). We have done long distance including race rides with mass starts, showing and the occassional bash at dressage.

I was going to go back to long distance as he is a nightmare in ridden shows. He either switches of and refuses to do anything or assumes that the canter round = a endurance race ride and races everything! He bucked me of when we all had to canter at his first VHS class this year - bless him obviously life in the old boy yet.

I was going to go back to endurance but I think that realistically anything more than 20 miles would be asking for trouble as he has had some signs of concussion issues with his legs.

We both enjoy schooling and on an arena surface he concentrates and we do reasonably well if I keep my nerves in check.

But - I bought quite a nice new sillohutte working hunter saddle at the start of the show season (before I realised that showing wasnt for us). It is very straight cut even for a WH saddle and has a nice medium deep seat with reactor foam. The stirrups are reasonably placed (not right at the front like some jumping saddles). I am short (5 foot 1) so long saddle flaps dont work for me and horse isnt happy with dressage girths.

Is my WH okay for dressage or would a proper dressage saddle be better?

I would like a dressage saddle but husband is currently out of work , we have a 5 year old son and a nice big mortgage on our shiny new house! Fortunatly my job is fine for at least the next year (fingers crossed) so we can get by okay.

I have been pouring over old photos of dressage masters (Nuno etc), and on youtube and most used saddles with bugger all knee rolls . But then they rode like them and I ride like me so need all the help I can get!

Sorry this is a long post I am so tempted to get out credit card and hammer it but think that maybe I would be being selfish.

I do Novice dressage in a GP (and do well), and it’s a synthetic! It’s the only saddle that fits Bodey Cob’s wide-ness!

Definitely keep with the WH saddle for now, a dressage saddle is not a requirement for dressage - a lot of people use the newer type saddles with bucket seats and huge knee rolls to compensate for riding faults rather than truely needing the saddle.

The further up the dressage ladder you go then the more need you'll feel for a dressage saddle, but a WH saddle should be more than adequate for the first few years of competition. If it was a jumping saddle then that might put a different angle on it, but your saddle sounds ideal actually

def not, in fact when I decided I wanted one as my GP is quite forward and wasn't helping I was looking for either a WH or a dressage saddle. Friend uses WH as it fits her wide pone well.

You dont...but I need to show off my mine

Sorry. I've been waiting a year and a half for it and it just had to be done! I only got mine though as Darcys difficult and either fits a Wintec, or a Kieffer. I've had a bad time with my wintec as its got no knee rolls and I'm too tall for it! If that makes sence. But yes, certainly no NEED for one x

thank you guys!

it was most heartening to read all the comments except darcyLu's who should be banned for having such a lovely saddle - I want!

Megan2006 < I do hope I can progess with my boy and maybe now I will think aim for medium (in my dreams ) and if we get there I will celebrate with a dressage saddle!

JoBo - I love that Fjord, in fact its really nice to see so many really lovely animals in peoples signatures!

No you do not need one.
Our horse did the BD nationals[novice] in a jumping saddle and is going to the BD home international [elem.]in his jumping saddle. When we can afford one we will get one but at the moment he can get great results in his comfy jumping saddle
