I'm in a total quandry. I've had to have an operation on my knee which means I won't be able to ride for 12 months! I've got a lovely 5 yr old which I have given to a local event rider to ride and he's coming on so well.

The rider is doing a great job but I can't keep him with her much longer as I can't afford it. I wouldn't mind selling him now but feel a bit bummed as I would want to buy another exactly like him when I'm back in the saddle.

Any thoughts???

Of course you are not stuck! You can terminate an agreement anytime you like (provided you have relevant clauses in your contract).

Plus, it may help to have a full loan for 12 months then after perhaps to share - give you time to get back in the saddle and to have a financial contribution.

As for saying you 'don't know anyone' - I didn't know the person I loaned my first horse from until I saw her advert!

Alternatively, get 2 sharers, each making a contribution. My friend has that with her horse, one person rides Monday & Wednesday and the other rides Saturday Sunday. They both muck out each time they ride and pay £25 per week.

If your horse is a competition prospect I would try the local event rider who has been schooling him who might have a working pupil or student who is looking for something to ride but can't afford to buy. Young riders are often advertising for horses to loan and might be very happy with this arrangement (they can get the experience and credit of brining him on a bit and you get your horse looked after).

Alternatively, depending on his temperament he might be suitable for an equestrian college, quite a few of them seem to have adverts looking for loan horses at the moment.

Additionally you can advertise for a loan home. I would expect you to have a lot of people respond and you should be able to find someone suitable, possibly near you where you can visit.

You have loads of options, don't despair!

That would be a perfect solution for me.My daughter is growing out of her pc pony and we will be looking for something in a few more months there are loads of good loaners out there.Hope your knee improves

Is he currently eventing with the pro rider?

Im sure you may find someone to have him on a short term loan. although I would be very selective about where you place him - if he is a nice 5 yr old, then personally I would try and put him with an experienced rider who'd be able to bring him on.

Its the kind of thing that i was thinking about doing... I have 2 horses, one mare eventing at PN level (hoping to upgrade by the end of the season), and the other, a gelding, who is coming back to work slowly after injury. Ideally I would love to have 2 horses out competing, so was thinking about seeing if anyone wanted theirs evented and then BSJA/BD over the winter. I cant afford to buy another one, so it seemed like a good option. Hopefully my gelding will be competing again next season, so I could then either compete 3 or give the loaned one back!

Good luck!
