Do I sell or not?

I have a tb mare, who I was going to breed this year (foal for myself) but the man who holds the purse strings (dad) wants me to concentrate on my boy instead. I understand, if I want another horse why not buy one of the hundreds out there!

However, I'm at a loss as to what to do with my mare, she's unbroken, 8 years old, pretty much used as a field ornament, and she cribs! I dont want to break her in, because I think one horse being backed at a time is enough for me to handle. I would like to sell her, but then who would really want her? She's a lovely mare and I think shes great but I'm obviously going to think that because shes mine.

Do you think I could sell her on? As a companion? Project? Free to good home?

I just worry as I know I would be selling her I would still want her to have a lovely life! And I worry about some of the dodgy people around who would sell her on for meat, not treat her right etc.

Any (nice) helpful advice please? Feeling fragile today

I wouldn't breed from her anyway - she has no experience to make her a good brood mare - and there are millions of tbs around for pennies.. Anyway, if you haven't time to handle two newly broken horses how would you manage with a foal too?

Selling her - she isn't that attractive a purchase unbroken - tbs sell for nothing even when they are broken, so you could be setting her up for a dodgy life.. Could you send her to be broken somewhere and then sell her? If she is happy as she is you could leave her a year, get your boy going and come back to her next year.

Ive had her for a few years now, just always had another horse to concentrate on. Try hard not to have favourites but we never really clicked.

I know there's a lot of tb out there but I was breeding for myself. That's the problem, my dad wants her gone, as he wants to get another in her place, more of a weight carrier than her. I'm the only person light enough in my family who wants to ride that can ride her. (mother and sister not interested)

I don't want to set her off on a dodgy life because I would just feel too gulity.

One of the embryo transfer places might be interested in loaning her although I'm not sure if they will take a maiden mare.

I would be careful about selling... saw a pic on the local horses for sale sites on fb the other night. Tb for sale if not gone by morning it's going to the knackers. Nothing wrong with it, just the owner wasn't capable of riding it and had bought a quiet cob and needed it gone.

I also wouldn't breed from your mare, she's unproven and youngsters are so cheap..

Hey pinklilly, I understand that, but the foal was going to be for myself, and I'm obviously not breeding her now.

I was thinking about a companion, then thought? Who would really need a companion for their horse these days

I have a companion, another tb. He can be ridden though. Most people prefer a small native type though. I would just be careful though about selling, seems to be so many dubious people about.

un broken, untried, 8 yrs old, tb, never clicked with her and a cribber no i wouldnt invest the 5 k to get a foal from her on the floor! yes you could move her on, chuck her in a sale she might fetch £300 (optomistic for unbroken tb unless exceptional confo/breeding) to be passed from pillar to post. OR you could be responsible and either keep as an ornament/grass eater or PTS. ans sorry it is half term!

Troll, at half term you must be having a joke. I left school years ago so half term means nothing to me.

I thought you were rude, you could have easily put your points of view across without sounding so rude. I would never speak to someone I don't know like that, when they have not said anything against me. I was brought up to think if you don't have anything nice to say then don't say it at all.

This is not my first post and it won't be my last. Everyone has their own opinions, but there is a way to put them across.

At the end of the day I'll do what's best for the horse.

you could only loan her as a companion and sadly there are hundreds of companions available! generally tbs do not make the best companions as they generally need more attention and more grub to keep them well. and as a cribber this makes her not suitqable for nannying, and expensive to keep in fence rails! go to ascot sales you can buy a broken to ride ex racing tb that doesnt crib for less than 300.

Have you the space to keep her and your boy?
If so can't you her but just concentrate on your boy ?
Sounds like you've got your hands full with him and she wont mind just being a pet !

Mad cat lady, I do but my dad is thinking of getting himself one and my fields can only really support two horses. Fields for summer and fields for winter.

If we dont get another one or I can't find her a nice home I will keep her and will just have to manage.

I do have my hands full at the moment with everything never mind the cheeky boy!

I did laugh at your username as well because that's what we call my sister!! Haha :)

I'm facing a similar dilemma with my Doris.

Do you know anyone who would back her for you as a project? That would add value/sellability to her straight away.

Scrunchie it's a hard situation to be in isn't it. Because we want the best for them!!

I've asked about but everyone who can/would is busy with their own.

If you have the space just keep her as a field ornament - horses have no sense of whether or not they are wasted so if you can keep her i would, that way you know she is well looked after. If you don't have the space you could send her away to be backed and then try to find her a loan home?

Eta - sorry, just seen you don't have much space, so i would opt for the secnd option if finances permit

She was bred over in ireland, for some reason or other was not trained. She was bought off the trailer straight from ascot sales. Was sold to us as broke... Not broke! I ended up with two slipped discs, she went quite well considering she wasn't broken. Didn't find out she wasn't broken until recently. But since then she's just been a field ornament.

In an ideal world, I'd find her a nice home! But if push comes to shove I'll keep her and just have to talk my dad around.

Paris1 she's 15.2 but she's quite fine! My dad would be able to ride her for a little bit, but not long term. Think he's a bit too heavy!!

(won't put his weight on here... He may kill me! :) haha)

Of Course You Can makes fair points.

If you decide you don't want to keep her, you have to accept that there are a limited number of the type of homes that you would want to sell to, that want a cribbing, unbroken, 8 year old tb, in this market and at this time of year.

I agree, it's just the way it was put across. If if come down to it I would keep her or Pts rather then have her sold on to an unsuitable person.
