I have been offered an ex racer ( I take on the odd one reschool and sell but am quite particular about only letting them go when really ready)

she is a 7 year old 15.2 bay mare raced 11 times but never been placed.

I have spoken to two of the syndicate owners who assure me she is a dream (which they always do!)

and tonight the trainer who advises that when she got this mare she was warned that any further problems on the track with her would result in a ban (trainer only said that she had a tendancy to bolt on the track)

She said that she had a deep seated back problem when she got her and had extensive physio which cured it, she hads never had a problem in the time she has had her at the track but confirmed that occasionaly she does still tank off although says it not particularly fast just that she doesn't really listen.

I tried to prise from her what the horses response is to new situations i.e different tack etc and she just says she feels like she might go up so trainers response is to get off and take it off ( small yard!)

She said she is bombproof in traffic and has never reared or bucked with her and doesn't tryt and get you off just the hard mouth thing. good to catch clip load and shoe

I don't mind a challange but don't want something dangerous and normally I know the trainer/ yard staff and get a clear idea of what I'm taking on and really can't decide what to do.

Something that takes off IMO isnt safe at all, what if she does that on the roads or with a new perspective buyer? Not worth it to me! Plenty of others :)

Very true I just wish I knew more about the circumstances of the bolting but probably the fact that I can't get clear answer should ring bells

If you're looking to eventually sell her on, then personally I'd say think twice. Bolting can be very though - as I'm sure you know - to completely fix. Do you really want to put the time/effort/money into an animal that may not be suitable to be sold on? On the other hand, only you know your ability and if you think you can successfully take this horse on, then go for it!

I don't think many people would take this girl on, so could you talk to the current owners and come to some compromise, ie try her for a month and see how you get on before committing? You could only improve her life chances.

I think after sleeping on it I will let my head ( which says no)

rule my heart(which says it could be her last chance)

Something niggles at me about the answers I have got about her
