My lower legs stick out! When I look at pics or vids of myself riding, my lower leg isn't "wrapped" around Jack. Jack is a wiiiiiide Clydesdale X and I find it physically impossible to bring my lower leg in, because it doesn't bend sideways from the knee. I can twist my legs out so that I can bend my knee and get my lower leg closer.... but then my toes stick out because they are no longer facing forwards. Is this a "cross I have to bear" because he is wide or do any of you have any tips?

Oh... I'm also 48, trained very "old school" and out of practise.... but I'm willing to learn! :D

Hi- Am no expert in any way but I was taught to ride with my knees "open" and lower leg on. Feels awkward at first but does sort of give that wrapped round feel. Also lots of no stirrup work to lengthen your leg helps with adapting to this position. Good luck!

I think you might be my twin, our horses even go by the same name :p

My lower leg has improved, but I can do nothing more to help my feet, except to hold them in place with my arm which is very impractical and looks very silly ;)

It certainly helped when my chubby beast lost some weight, and if you can start of each riding session with no stirrups in walk and then try and stretch them down as much as possible.

The opposite also works for me - riding with my stirrups a couple of holes shorter than usual and focusing on getting toes pointed foreward, then drop them down again :)

Also, make sure he is moving off your leg and you are not having to kick him with your heel for a reaction, if that makes any sense?
