Sorry, another winter boot thread!

I may be asking for too much here but I am looking for my ideal boots for the winter. (Isn't everyone?! ;) ) I suffer from very cold feet so they must be warm, properly waterproof, tough enough for a bit of yard work but suitable for riding in. I also would like to wear them over breeches or jeans, so they can't be too close-fitting (or too loose!) I have wide-ish calves but not super-chunky.

I like the country boot/Dubarry look, which look nice with jeans. I haven't got a budget as such but I would rather not pay Dubarry prices!

I seem to be able to find what I am looking for in many different boots, but not all together in one type!

I dont have them myself but I am going to buy myself a pair, I believe they are called "Woof Wear" muckers, go onto the frogpool website as I know for sure they do then there. I'd recommend the long ones as they are fleece lined and a lot of girls on my yard wear them with jeans. They have Velcro type fastenings on the side so the width is fully adjustable :)

Eta - they're also not too expensive either ;)

I just got a pair of the long Woof Wear ones, so far so good with them, they seem comfy and warm. And I have a pair of Rydale Malhams, which leak a bit so are pretty hopeless for wet weather:mad:, but they look pretty for when I need to do the 'smart horsey' look:p

Probably more than you want to pay but my Ariat Grasmeres are the best boots ever. I wore them through all of last winter with lots of snow, have stood in rivers (am Biology teacher) and they are still fab, warm and don't leak. They're great for riding and look good with jeans too still going strong after 2 years. Well worth the money. I have chunky ex-runners calves and they adjust really well to fit.

Sue

Tuffa Suffolks - get the broad fitting though if you want to wear with jeans (unless you have legs like spaghetti!)

The woof wear winter long boot, is on equestrianclearance.com down to £39.99 thinking about it myself... i'd like leather or leather look too but for a reasonable price and a slightly chunky calf... pa!

Loved my long Woof Wear boots, comfy and warm, but they leaked where the fabric joins the rubber upper. Spent most of their life drying out instead of on my feet.

The Ariat Grasmeres have been wonderful. Have had mine for several years now and live in them summer and winter. Protect feet from extremes of temperature, very comfortable, never leak and cope with unlimited abuse.

I have these http://www.tuffaboots.com/index.htm?subj=Footwear in the Country Rider version, which are lovely and warm and great to ride in. The calf is quite narrow but has those adjustable things at the top so may be wide enough. My friend has the suffolk version which have more of a chunky sole so not so great for riding in, but still excellent value for money. Think I paid about £145 for the country rider by shopping around.

Can also recommend the Dublin Duluxe wellies as they are Neoprene lined, they are sooo warm and look quite smart to. They come up quite big so although I am normally a generous 6, I was able to fit into the kiddies size 5 (even with two pairs socks!) so only £29.99 from my local tack shop (better for my bank balance than paying the £140 odd for the neoprene le chameau that I was going to get!!:D).

Thanks for all the suggestions, folks!

I was really tempted by the Country Riders but I have the Tuffa Norfolks, which I ride in
and absolutely love but they are not at all waterproof. I have heard of the same issues with the Suffolks and Country Riders.

Ariat Grasmeres seem to be the way to go as they have the look I like as well as being waterproof etc.

I was about to post this exact same question.

My Dubarrys have finally died,, I abused them terribly, they lasted 4 years and I'm sure would still be going stong today had I looked after them better.

Decided to try the Tuffa Suffolks as I really like the look of them and they sounded just the ticket - durable, water resistant etc (also my budget can't quite stretch to another paid of dubarrys). They arrived last week and I was delighted, looked great, very comfy and warm,,, however, a week down the line and they are letting in water:mad: I have rang and complained and been told to send them back and they will contact me upon receipt to discuss refund/exchange.

Do I just expect too much from my boots?, I want (exactly the same as OP has posted), a versatile yard boot, I don't muck out in them but stomp around the fields poo-picking etc, walk the dogs, maybe ride in (but not essential). They have to cope with getting wet and muddy and I'm really disappointed that the Tuffas have failed within a week (infact, only after 2 wears in wet weather). I would expect that if you are paying £150 plus then they should be able to do the job:confused:

Would be interested in other peoples experiences of the Suffolk boot as I am going to have to decided whether to ask for money back or an exchange,, I was hoping I just had a faulty pair.. but not so sure now.

Kibob - I had the same problem with my Suffolks - let water in after about a week - and I was only poo-picking in them in damp grass. I've sprayed them with waterproof stuff but am not sure how effective it'll be as I think the water came in through the stitching. I now do all my yard work in wellies but they don't keep my feet as warm. I like the Suffolks but probably won't buy any again as they're not waterproof.

Friend and I both bought new boots at Burghley - she got Ariat Windemeres and I got Welligogs, both about the same price. Mine are still as good as new but the linings are coming out of the Ariats already!

Have just posted my Suffolk Boots back to Tuffa, hopefully will get a refund - don't think I'll ask for an exchange due to the reviews on here.

So back to the drawing board so to speak, will start checking out the other options. Does anyone know if the suede part on the Grassmere and windemere boots stands up to the wet well? doesn't it get those white marks that suede gets once it's been wet?

and to top it all off.... my wellies have sprung a leak now too:rolleyes:

If you want something to ride in then Ariat Bromonts are your best bet. I have Dubarrys, Grasmeres and Conistons and they only ones I enjoy riding in are the Bromonts. They are also super toasty, waterproof, scrub up well and wear well so great for around the yard.

The Dublin Pinnacles look like suede but theyre all leather so can be hosed down (or walked through a stream as i did earlier!) without any ill effect. I have some leather cleaner that Ive used and brings them up good as new.

Link please - I can only find them on there at £225.

Sorry I was slightly incorrect, the Bromonts are £161, Grasmeres £182 from Ingatestone. I rang to ask if they were on special offer last month when I got mine, and was told no, they sell under Ariat's RRP, but Ariat won't let Ingatestone advertise them online at under the RRP. Maybe other companies are the same so worth ringing around.

I cannot praise my Toggi Canyons enough - have waded through rivers, spent a winter in ankle-high mud, used them through spring for both riding and dog-walking - but did find them a bit warm for the height of summer - and whilst theyve darkened in colour somewhat, no leaks or lining issues, nothing. I don't even look after them very well, just chuck them in the porch when I get back from yard! Also more generous in the salf than the Dublin River Boots, which I narrowly escaped! They were a bit tight at first and had to wear a thin jodphur/leggings but after a couple of weeks of wear they gave and I got probably another inch or two width-wise.

Plus, I believe you can pick them up for under a hundred quid!

Well, I tried on the Ariat Grasmeres... didn't like them.

Also tried the Dublin Pinnacles... not a good fit on me. Very baggy around the ankles.

So, Toggi Canyons are next (Thanks for the recommendation, AprilBlossom)

Also, has anyone got Sherwood Forest Dalton or Newton boots? A bit more obscure than Ariats etc but they are nice looking.

Not really stylish or ride-able in, but for anyone here complaining about cold feet in wellies I cant recommend the sheepskin lined wellies from cane highly enough. I suffer terribly with poor circulation but they're really warm and toasty. Plus they've been through all sorts at the stables and on the allotment and not let me down in the 4 years I've had them (touching wood frantically ;))
Better yet they were something silly like 2 pairs for £30 (friend got the other pair)
