do people turn out in those lycra hoods?

No, never. A horse at a yard I used to work at managed to pull his up so it covered his eyes. He went through a couple of fences and into a blackthorn hedge before he was found. Just not worth the risk - and I have a Gypsy Cob with a VERY long mane, so I really wish I could!

how did they manage to injure themselves out of curiosity?:o But yes that was my thinking, that they could cause more problems than they solve

I've been considering getting one as my lad has pretty much no mane left, before he looses the last of it... Would like to know what people think about them and whether they work to stop mane rubbing...

To be honest I've been putting of trying one as I find them a bit creepy :o

I would never put Shy out in his - he has the proper snuggy, and also a fleece one off ebay - and he only ever has them on in the stable. Mind you he loves the damned things (very cosy so he tells me).

BUT if out in the field, I reckon a horse only has to rub his head on a fence post, get the thing pulled down over his eyes, and there you go - blind panic. A lot of people do use them for outside (and I'm sure that's what they are designed for), but no, not for me.

Ahh definately not getting one of those then!! A friend said you can get hoots with ear holes but not full face, has anyone seen any of these cos I sure as heck haven't...

If not any other ideas to prevent total mane baldness, oils and conditioners don't seem to work :(

You can get the ones that just go up the neck, that would be much better.

Shy's mane is very long and silky - all I use is pig oil and sulphur. His turnout rug has a hood on, and it doesn't rub at all (an Amigo).

Yes, I have one, haven't tried it yet as I think it will make him too hot :(

Use them regularly for turnout, and never had a problem. I use much thinner lycra hoods made by Polly Products at night and equally never had anything slip or move :-)

If you can let me know where you got it from so I can have a look id be ever grateful, I've been looking but can't seem to find one... My boy is a wimp so the heat would only be a plus to him... I mean giant wimp :o

An I'd be concerned with the neck only ones falling down and doing more harm to his mane than good.

Might get some pig oil, have tried other oils conditioners etc but I didn't think they have done any good, mind you he's almost that bald already I probably wouldn't notice :o

I wouldn't turn out in a hood with a face.
However I don't see the problem with turning out in a lycra hood neck without face..?

My vet warned me never EVER to touch one, lots of shocking eye injuries from them. Dam things should be withdrawn from the market there dangerous.

I got it from Ebay - I think it's Shires, but have looked on there and on Barnstormers and can only find the full face ones. Will check the make tomorrow as it's currently up the yard.

Gentle giant 88 if ur point if getting one is to help stop your horses mane falling out due to neck rugs your wasting your time and will most likely make it worse

The mane falls out due to heat from neck rugs, making pours open wide and mane easily then comes out

It's the heat generated that causes it not rubbing

Only way to stop it is no neck rugs I'm afraid :-(

That would be much appreciated, have been looking but they all have faces, and as I said I find them a bit creepy, and worry about them moving, I'd be happier with one with no face as I'd be less worried about slippage. :D

Hope this helps, there are a few open face on here, mine does have the ear holes though :)

Thanks I shall be getting one of those, worth a try and all that :)

And ludoctro, he sort of has to have high neck rugs, he has a full clip but with legs left on, and he's a wimp. Shivers if he doesn't have multiple rugs on, gets checked multiple times through the day, is never hot or even warm... I'll give the faceless hood a try perhaps with some pig oil for good measure, if all else fails it will keep his neck and mane clean, he's grey, well white actually... Or supposed to be anyway.

Please please don't use these. My angel used to be able to see and competed at meter twenty. Now blind in one eye. Vet tells me not freak accident but very very common. Please don't use them, broke my heart that I put it on her and now she's blind and been through so much pain. And yes it did fit well and was in good condition.

Yes I do! I use snuggy hoods which fit well, have never had any issues either. I only use them in the middle of winter though, have never used one of the cheaper lycra hoods though. I also use one on our mare for sweet itch - its the snuggy hood, hood and body. When its not too hot, it works a treat, as she has sweet itch in her udder area, and this means we can keep it covered.

Have never had an accident, and make sure they fit well.

I had an open head one and it was awful. Would ping off the ears and then slip down the neck, tightening and strangling my girlie :(
I do have the head one and was waiting until the ponies were in the field outside the house so I could keep an eye on them but all the comments are worrying me.

They need them more in the stable 2bh as they like to mush their face in their poo. Does anyone have any horror stories whilst they were used in the stable?

I'd never turn out in one, too risky. My boy was the most sensible and sane horse I've ever known in the stable - once he was in his bedroom, he'd eat his dinner and then snooze until the morning - he wasn't one to move around the stable!
I popped one on him one evening and came back the next morning to see it stuck over and digging right into his eye, it was gory and horrible and I've never seen anything like it, I thought he was going to lose his eye. Luckily, by some complete miracle and weeks of TLC, he was fine and his sight somehow wasn't affected - but I realise how extremely lucky he was and would never use one again. As I said, he was the most still and sensible horse in the stable and I would never have thought it would move on him - still not sure how he managed to turn it around as he did. You can get ones that just go up the neck & don't go over the eyes, they're a lot better but I personally would still avoid them after that. The vet told me that he sees injuries like this all the time & people just don't realise how dangerous the hoods can be.

^^^^ those stories prove the stupid things should be withdrawn from sale.

Please people no matter how well you think they fit they do serious damage to horse, the only thing they are fit for is the bin..!
