I have a fab little pony who came to me 16 weeks ago on a respiratory supplement as he was kept in 24/7 in a barn and had had no turn out for 4 months over the winter. His barn was quite dusty and he needed soaked hay etc but he did cough with his last owners hence the supplement. When he came to us he was out in the day and in at night on haylage and he didn't cough at all so I stopped the supplement ages ago. He is now out 24/7 in a sparse paddock with well soaked hay supplemented regularly to avoid the usual pony laminitis issues! I don't generally give any of my ponies any hard feed in the summer only a bit of chaff now and again when they are working hard etc because they are watching their weight! Generally he is very well but does have the occasional cough and a slightly runny nose which he hates. He shakes his head around to get rid of the nose run and happily stands to have his nose wiped before going on again. This occurs generally and mostly in a dusty arena! I might try some vaseline around his nostrils to see if this helps with the dust etc. Anyway..............getting to my question.........would it be worth trying him back on a respiratory supplement again? He doesn't cough a great deal and isn't wheezy and is happy to work hard but I am slightly worried about the cough. Do these supplements work and which one?? Any experience of them and any other ideas?
