Do they grow out of it?

Got a dreaded phonecall this lunchtime to say that my youngster had jumped out of the field onto the main road! He had decided to follow 3 horses that were being taken out and he still had 3 horses left in with him. He jumped a stone wall and skinned his back legs. It has really shaken me up and I have now put steps in place to ensure no horses leave without me taking my lad out as well. Not ideal but he just seems to get where he wants to be by jumping out. Do they grow out of this as they get older and more confident?

No is the simple answer, our 10yr old sprained his tendon being an idiot in the field, our 19yr old arthritic mare sprained her tendon by being jealous of a new horse arriving, galloping up to him squealing, last but not least, 13yr old TB covered in bites from his old yard, cut his stifle and took a chunk out of his heel while removing a very heavy gate from it's hinges trying to remove his fly rug

If he is kept with other horses in a field and not alone usually they get used to other horses coming andgoing.

He might have had a particular bond with one of the horses but they usually get less needy as they grow up, a couple more times and he should be fine but you will just have to keep a close eye on him

I think he is attached to a particular filly. It was hard to tell yesterday as it could have just been that 3 went out at once and he wanted to go with them. He'll be a sore lad this morning. The YO has moved them into a different field which doesn't have the stone wall. Managing it is one thing but I am hoping that he learns to cope with horses coming and going. He's 2.
