I was just reading a naming post, and am just wondering if it makes a difference what you call your horse. I had a foal that I called Luciano, seemingly, It meant devil, and he was definitely a devil, seriously evil, he fought every step of the way, never had a bad experience, he was torture to deal with, I had him 12 mths and ended up selling him to a guy I knew for less than I paid for him, on the understanding he knew what he was buying. He still has him, and he drives him in harness, but as of yet, he's never been ridden. Last I heard, 50 odd attempts ended badly. I gave him up, as all my horsey friends begged me to for my own safety. My old mare cassie, was a gem, my 2 year old, Batista, is big and strong, and firey, but nice and pretty. So, do you think it matters, or is it all down to luck??? This is just out of interest!!!!

Interesting idea! I have a mare I called Poppaea, after the roman empress and coz I liked the name Poppy for short. Didn't really do much reserch on the name before I used but have since found out Poppaea Sabina was not such a nice lady (google her if interested!) needless to say, Poppaea the pony is not so lovely either.........tho as yet hasn't had her mother in law killed, but she does frequently try and kill me.....

This being nearly killed has to stop, eh!! Was just thinking further about it, there was a horse in the riding school, called whacko jacko, omg, he was totally that, I used to ride him, he could go as fast backwards as forwards, he could be good, but mostly bad. I was down the fields dishing out hay, and the rs owner shouted as a stone passed me, which she threw, as the same whacko jacko was in the process of doble barrelling me into the head. only for stone upset his aim, i'd be brain dead. friend took him hunter-trialing, we were in a team of three, count down, 54321, and whacko went backwards as fast as he could. needless to say we didnt win. the more i think about it, i believe it might make a difference!!!

What comes first for some horses though, the name or the behaviour? And do people treat horses different because of their names? Just thinking aloud...

Someone (Richard Wiseman I think) has done research on people living up to their surname (Mr Baker the Baker, Mrs Cook the restaurant chef) etc and there's a high rate of self-fulfilling prophecy in terms of names and careers. Maybe there's a bit of self-fulfilling prophecy with some horses too?

Maybe thats very true, Luciano was named at 3 weeks, and was lovely, (in the field), until he was weaned. Now, he was weaned as kindly as you can take them away, but i didnt know what luciano meant when i named him, it was a guy i deal with at work, on the phone, that inspired the name. I do agree though, that maybe if you call your horse buck, because it bucks then your asking for trouble. I just want to hear others opinion on it, it's an interesting one!!!

My horses are called Donks and Stroplings Tempest, Donks is as sweet as they come if a little set in his ways and stubborn! and Stroppy is exactly that! a typical firey irish red head and who ever named her could not have named her better if they had tried, Kayla's buzz is called buzz as he is a little fire cracker and buzze's about all over the place, his 'proper name' is Palladius which if you google is an irish saint and the first bishop of the irish christians dating back to before st patrick and was sent from Rome to Ireland as a bishop but their was a greek Palladius also a saint but he had his sainthood revoked! and buzz has days of being saint like and days where his halo definitley slips!!

Mines called Malteser. No, sadly he does not live up to his name and change into a delicious chocolate ball filled with biscuity goodness.

Not sure about Jasper, but my cat Menace DEFINITELY lives up to his name! I often wonder how he would've turned out if we'd named him Fluffy or something! lol

I had a horse called Taz, short for Razmatazz and he certainly had that. He was also called Tazmanian Devil, and yes he was certainly that.

My old games pony was called Sparky and YES he was sparky! He was a little pocket rocket, at 12hh he was faster then a lot of the 14.2s doing games and was the fizziest little pony I've ever had. I love the little guy :)

I have a horse called Tiger who was named by the Sheiks in Dubai in honour of Tiger Woods not only is he a complete ladies man and very talented he also needs to be treated with the same respect as a wild tiger!! Those teeth of his come a bit of keen!
