Do they sell ex racers to anyone ?

Had a visitor on our yard today who wanted to hire horsebox to pick up his newly purchased horse.The man was about 65 and rather strange.He had no livery for horse .Told me he had renamed horse black beauty as it was very pretty !!!he didnt seem full ticket .
So he had bought horse no means of transport and no livery . Surely people who sell ex racers on look into new homes.Dont want to jump to conclusions but he didnt seem like he had any idea of horses needs and wanted pretty pet.

Well anyone I know who re-home ex racers certainly do vet the homes. Maybe this old boy was making it up. Where was he going to put it if he had noo livery organised? sounds very odd.
 
Most peculiar man .Just started to get very concerned for new horse.I have had ex racer and in right hands they are lovely but not for novice who seemed sandwich short of picnic.
He said it was coming from newmarket and he had already bought it.
 
Could be he's bought it straight off the course. There is a type of race (I think its unimaginatively called a seller) where all the horses are for sale. Its a gamble for the owners as they have to put down a price and hope that nobody submits a higher bid. If they do then the owner has essentially 'sold' the horse. I've seen it happening before where someone's taken a shine to a horse and stuck in a price - not really thinking they would get it.

Usually they have to take the horse home from the race as they have to pay for the horse after the race and it automatically becomes yours. Could be that's how he suddenly ended up with a horse he needs to get moved and housed.
 
A lot of racing yards do vet homes to an extent. many of their horses will have spent 2yrs or more in the yard and will be someones pet. However often racehorse owners who arent actually horse people will sell to just about anyone who will give them a bit of cash/take the horse off their hands.

Sounds odd alright, but Ive seen a fair few cases like one you mention and for the most part they've had decent care turned out to grass. Someone who knows so little wont tend to interfere with them, just let them be.
 
Yes not that type.He had a woman with him that had learning disabilities and was litlle handicapped.Seemed caring enough just not too bright.
 
Actually that would make sense as he had jacket and tie(of sorts) could have been at races all day.The woman he was with had dressy mismatched clothing and lots of plastic jewelry .
