Last week My friend asked me for advice and help, with her lame horse. Her fetlock was slightly swollen and a little heat. I advized her to hose her horses leg for a few minutes, keep her turned out and not to ride her for a few days. (ive had to go through this at least 4 times a year with my 30yr old) She didnt listen....She carried on riding her. Then....2 night ago, she asked another livery on what they thought, and..she said...hose her legs, dont ride her BUT Keep her stabled???

I was always told a lame horse needs excersise, not to be couped up in a stable 24/7!?!?!? Anyway.....i saw her earlier...and she is more lame now, than how she started! It really annoyed me! If people ask for help, why do they listen to someone who hasnt got much experience with horses, than to someone who is studying for veterinary surgeon?!

Well of course it depends why and where the horse is lame whether it should be in or out, but yes I know what you mean, I think some people just like to collect opinions....then do the opposite anyway!

It is annoying when people ask for advice then go ahead and do exactly what they originally planned to do regardless of the advice given.

Even sillier is when people call out the vet, then do the exact opposite to what the vet recommends. Honestly, what's the point of paying the callout if you're gonna do that.

My vets who are a respected equine practice have told me that until you know the cause of lameness the horse should be kept on box rest so it can't cause further damage.

I'd take their advice over that anyone else's personally.

ETS It's people riding lame horses that annoy me...

Wouldn't really bother me I'm afraid, I always would expect people to get lots of opinions, and am used to people still going against all the advice they receive! However, I always thought you should box rest a lame horse (at least until vet has seen it). But, maybe that's an out-of-date view?

It doesn't annoy me.

I have sometimes asked for advice, more for a second opinion though. I don't always follow the advice as I dont always agree with it. I will sometimes ask a few people for advice.

Last year my horse has a swollen fetlock, quite hot and a little lame. Everyone told me to turn him out. I didn't, I kept him in and just walked him inhand a few times a day to keep the leg moving and the swelling down. Few days later the leg was all scabby. He had mud fever but the scabs hadnt been aparent at first. Good job I kept him in

If you asked someones advice and you didn't agree with it would you still follow it ??

I happen to agree with the advice you have given (although we only have half a story etc) but perhaps she did not.

i often ask peoples advice / opinions but don't always go with what they think. sometimes its just good to know what others would do etc.

Whether a lame horse should be kept in or out depends on what is causing the lameness (as a vet student you must surely know this??).

I would advise someone whose horse had unexplained lameness to get the vet out straight away - there are several causes of lameness that will not be helped by cold-hosing or rest and that need proper veterinary diagnosis/attention (again, as a vet student you must be aware of this!).

Sorry - no offence intended, but surely the only responsible advice in this situation (where you don't know the cause) is to get a vet out?

Having currently got a horse on box rest with a suspected annular ligament strain, then I would say cold horse and box rest. If no better after a short period box rest - VET! My mare's injury didn't look anything major, but turns out it could well be riding career limiting

You just never know and that in my opinion is what vets are for.

Not turnout for a suspected sprain, sorry.

I always say to people who ask me "I would do this", not "you should" and always say "get the vet if you are unsure".

End of the day, their horse, their decision, not worth getting upset over.
